Seattle-area garbage haulers near strike
SEATTLE -- A union representing 600 Seattle-area garbage truck drivers chose picket locations and made signs Sunday in preparation for a possible strike.

A day earlier, Teamsters Local 174 rejected four-year contract proposals from Allied Waste Industries Inc. and Waste Management Inc., citing problems with health care and overtime provisions.

Garbage service for about 2 million households and thousands of businesses in King and Snohomish counties is at stake.

Frustrated union leaders - who met with Waste Management representatives Sunday but had not agreed on a time to talk to Allied Waste officials - were still deciding whether to strike.
