Baghdad April toll 'more than 1000'
AT least 1091 people were killed in Baghdad alone last month in ongoing sectarian violence, President Jalal Talabani said in a statement today. "We received a report from the morgue about the deaths in Baghdad that 1091 people were killed between April 1 and 30," Mr Talabani was quoted as saying in a statement issued by his office.

"We are shocked and angry at the daily reports of unidentified bodies being discovered and of people killed on the basis of their identity," he said. Iraq has been engulfed in a tit-for-tat sectarian violence since the bombing of a revered Shiite shrine in the northern town of Samarra on February 22.

Thousands of bodies have been discovered across Iraq, mostly of Sunni Arabs, killed in Shiite reprisals after the Samarra bombing.

The violence has raged amid the power vaccum as nearly five months after the December elections for the country's first permanent post-Saddam era Parliament, Iraq is still without a government.

1. This is the kind of story the White House wants the press to ignore
Better to report instead about a school somewhere in Iraq that just got a new coat of paint. But don't mention the billion dollar contract Haliburton got to paint the school. Just report happy stuff. Nothing to see here, move along. Stay the course. Support the troops.

3. Baghdad sees 1,100 executions in one month
BAGHDAD, Iraq - President Jalal Talabani said Wednesday that nearly 1,100 bodies were found in Baghdad last month, the victims of executions, and urged Iraq’s feuding factions to unite against surging crime and terrorism.

Talabani said in a statement that the 1,091 bodies found in the Baghdad area in April were the tip of the iceberg.

“We feel shock, dismay and anger over the daily reports of the discovery of unidentified corpses and those of others killed” around the capital, he said.
