Kansas minister preaches doom and hatred (The AP on Phelps)
OGDEN, Iowa - The soldier's flag-draped casket is set on the gymnasium floor, below the unlit scoreboard, before bleachers crowded with mourners.

They are there for Sgt. Daniel Sesker, the young man known for an infectious laugh and a wide smile, his life taken abruptly by an improvised explosive device outside Tikrit. Inside his high school, those who loved him are just beginning to grieve.

Outside, near a cornfield awaiting planting, picketers thank God for Daniel Sesker's death, talk approvingly of his entrance into hell, and mock the mourners. Amid gusting winds, they struggle to hold up signs that read "Thank God for IEDs" and "God Hates Your Tears."

And back home in Kansas, tucked away in an office over Westboro Baptist Church, Pastor Fred Phelps need only think of what he's done, and he cracks a smile.

Good reporting, he actually got into their heads with interviews.

2. I think because he is representative of a large portion of
ignorant Americans and it's good to let people know they are getting bolder in their insanity.

9. Nonsense...

...A "large portion of ignorant Americans" think that the soldiers are serving the devils purpose and deserve to die??!! I see no evidence of that, even from the most ignorant, red areas of the country. After all the publicity he's managed to scrap up since Mathew Shepards death, Phelps still can't attract anybody to his protests other than the original handful of mostly family members that constitue his congregation. Even the ignorant, hateful, bigoted, anti-gay rednecks in this country aren't buying his particularly odious hatefulness.

3. They passed a national law to ban what he does.
That gives him attention.

And why did they pass such a law? Because he's dishonoring America's war dead.

THAT gets him attention.

4. Which is total bullshit
Everyone was fine with him protesting aids victims funerals. It wasn't until he set his sights on soldiers that they decided to do something.

10. Because he's a freak show

And he makes people like Falwell and Robertson feel better about themselves. Because even they aren't that hateful.

5. Phelps protested Mister Roger's memorial.
There have been thousands of protests since, at the funerals of homosexuals - but also at memorials for Mister Rogers, victims of Sept. 11 and West Virginia miners. There have been more than 25,000 such demonstrations, by the church's count.

Phelps should have his underage children taking away from him and put in Gay foster parents.

8. Luke 6: 36, 37
Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.
Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not,
and ye shall not be condemned

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Sounds like Pastor Fred is preaching from the pulpit of the AntiChrist

but I'm in no position to judge others. That's God's job, and Pastor Fred

is not mine.

11. This Kansan would like to remind DU that Fred was reared in Mississippi.
And he does not represent anyone from Kansas other than his sick, twisted clan.

12. "Brokeback Mountain" parody pokes fun at these nutcases
http://birdshot.cf.huffingtonpost.com

The short film follows the adventures of two righteous fundamentalist cowboys, Adam and Steve, as they carry their fanatic crusade to the West Village in NY, only to discover a certain "affection" for each other along the way. Don't miss the stellar appearance of a certain VP as he daydreams of applying his brand of "compassionate conservatism" to the passionate cowboys.
