TIME Says Michael Powell May Leave FCC

Populist outrage is threatening to undo a controversial effort by the FCC to loosen restraints on media megaliths. In the Senate last week, seven Republicans joined 28 Democrats to schedule a rare "resolution of disapproval" to overturn new FCC rules that would let companies like News Corp. and Viacom expand their media holdings in local markets. Then in the House, defecting Republicans fueled a 40-to-25 committee vote to reverse part of the FCC's action. Now it appears that the chief architect of those rules, FCC chairman Michael Powell, may not stick around for the fight. According to industry sources, the son of Secretary of State Colin Powell has told confidants he'd like to leave by fall, and three of his four top staff members are putting out job feelers.

2. Actually, this was the plan all along

Powell comes in, hands the media in its entirety to the GOP propaganda ministry, congress is "in an uproar" and passes legislation to undo it, safe in the knowledge that Bu$h will veto it, and the House Boy gets his reward -- a cushy job in the very industry his position was intended to regulate.

If Congress overturns the FCC ruling and Bush tries to veto it he is toast. Perhaps if they could put it off until after the election but that would take some doing.

14. This does seem to be a pattern...retiring people before they accumulate

too much baggage or too many hits and the press gets their hooks into them...but staying in long enough to do some serious damage. Hard to hit a moving target....rolling stones gather no moss, etc. This is in keeping with corporate procedures.
I'm sure all those who have left the Bush administration (and that list is getting long) have cushy jobs awaiting them as a reward.

just to keep it as bad as it is! It has to be done, of course, but all this work to maintain the status quo and not let it get even worse is a heartbreaking reminder of corporate power.
