U.S. wants decision now on U.N. chief race

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - U.S. Ambassador John Bolton pushed on Wednesday for a quick resolution in the race to succeed Kofi Annan as U.N. secretary-general, an action that could favor the South Korean front-runner.

U.N. Security Council members on Thursday conduct another straw poll among seven declared candidates, which could show whether South Korean Foreign Minister Ban Ki-moon retains the lead he held in two previous straw polls.

"We are at the point where we should make a decision," Bolton told reporters, adding that a new secretary-general, who would take office on January 1, needed a transition period.

1. Hm ... Whoever it is will be there in January, but YOU won't!
I wonder if this impatience is to thwart any possibility of Bill C. throwing his hat into the ring ...

3. Not Clinton, but the South Korean candidate
Bush knows by the time the election is held he won't get his way and someone will be picked he doesn't like.

UNITED NATIONS -- U.N. Security Council members agree that Secretary-General
Kofi Annan's successor should be selected by the end of October, a timetable
that would give an advantage to the current front-runner, South Korean Foreign
Minister Ban Ki-Moon, diplomats said.

Further bolstering Ban's chances, diplomats from several key Security Council
nations said their governments would not mind if the next U.N. chief comes
from among the seven formally declared candidates, among whom Ban enjoys the
most support.
