Laesch (Hastert's Dem. opponent) Calls for Hastert's Resignation
(mods, please note the following is the text of a press release statement, which is intended for full text republication by all media sources)

Laesch Calls for Hastert's Resignation

Following is the text of John Laesch's remarks as prepared for his news conference in Chicago on October 2, 2006.

My Name is John Laesch and I am running for Congress, against Dennis Hastert in Illinois' 14th District.

I want to thank you for coming here today and I would like to thank the netroots for following this important story.

Let me be clear about why we are here today.

We already know that Mark Foley crossed the line and maybe even broke the law nobody disagrees on this point.

We are here today to ask, why did Dennis Hastert and Republican leaders try to cover this story up when they are always politicizing family values on the campaign trail?

Let me give you an example with a few words from a very famous man:

"Even though our children may be at home with the doors locked that doesn't mean that they are safe. We must continue to be proactive in warding off pedophiles and other creeps who want to take advantage of our children...."

These are the words of Speaker of the House, J. Dennis Hastert from a 1998 press release that announced the passage of the Child Protection & Sexual Predator Punishment Act, H.R. 3494.

Those are pretty strong words from a former teacher who tried to cover up the fact that one of the Republican members of his house was preying, in a sexual manner, on underage, male pages.

We know for a fact that both John Shimkus and Dennis Hastert knew about Mark Foley's sexual advances towards underage boys.

Eleven months ago, Shimkus and Hastert were finding ways to cover up Foley's affection for pages.

Surprisingly, today, they think that Mark Foley should be tried under the full weight of the criminal justice system.

Eleven months ago Foley deserved a slap on the wrist and today he should be in jail.

Apparently the word proactive to Dennis Hastert means wait eleven months then act as soon as you are caught by the media.

Here is what is going on...

Dennis Hastert is playing a smoke and mirrors game with the media to divert attention from the fact that he knew and that he was responsible.

Dennis Hastert has said that he is responsible for everyone working in the Capital. On page 235 of Hastert's book, Speaker, he says that he is responsible for the young boys who open mail in the clerk's office. This is a short excerpt from the book about the anthrax scare in Washington D.C. These are Dennis Hastert's words:

We said, 'We have _kids_ opening that mail.' I'm responsible for the people who work in these buildings on Capitol Hill, so I decided we were better off shutting down and sending everyone home."

In 2001, Dennis Hastert is responsible, but by 2005 he felt that investigating a possible sex offender is just too much work. It was so important that maybe he even forgot about it.

We have been watching Shimkus and Hastert squirm for the last several days and I think it is important that we call them out on their flip-flopping. Here is the timeline.

At first, Dennis Hastert said that he knew nothing about Foley's addiction to young male pages.

Then, Dennis Hastert has said that he can not remember if he heard about Foley's predeliction for young pages or not.

Now he is saying that maybe he had heard about it but he did not know the details. He didn't know how bad it was.

Hastert wanted to see and sniff all of the dirty laundry when it was Bill Clinton's affair with a grown woman. But Hastert doesn't give a damn when it is a Republican hitting on underage boys.

9. DCCC needs to get their head
out of their butts. Rham Emanuel needs to get some money to that guy. Dean has been giving money to everyone regardless of the potential under the DLC select list of favored people. I only give to DNC now. No more crap about who is viable and who is not.

I live in Georgia, and am liking what I'm reading of John. I donated money to him because I want him to take down that fat ass fucker Hastert.
If I had more to give, I would, but I'm currently unemployed.
Maybe some others on DU can take the hint, and give money to him as well.

John Laesch on the Issues

As your Congressman, John will work toward:

A health care system that ensures every American has access to affordable healthcare without overburdening government resources.

An economy that puts the needs of Main Street before the desires of Wall Street while defending the American Dream for future generations.

An education system that expands upon the dedication of family, promotes responsibility, and rewards achievement while opening the door to infinite possibilities.

A national energy policy that focuses on reducing foreign energy dependence and national consumption, promotes alternative energy sources and strives for sustainability.

A foreign policy that includes a Success Strategy for Iraq in the short-term and respects other nations; safeguards our security, the environment and workers rights in the long-term.
Ending the War in Iraq, bringing our heroes home and allowing International peace-keepers to resolve the ongoing civil war.

A political system that works to ensure the integrity of our electoral system, increases voter turnout and reduces the influence of special interest groups.

A voting system that protects the right to vote and insures that your vote has been counted.

I have taken the Voters First Pledge to make elections fair, restore accountability, and get lobbyists out of Washington.

They belong to the American public.

There is a line (not Geraldo), and they've crossed way over that line.

Go! Leave! And don't look back, you pond scum!

11. What are Mahoney(FL), Stover(IL), Davis(NY), Hearn(LA), Meier(OH), and
Truman(MO) saying? They might benefit from our help. Here are links to them and their hometown media outlets. Hearn(LA) doesn't even have an Internet page!

I've listed the Democratic challengers to the Republican incumbents I consider most
vulnerable to calls for resignation.

These Democrats need to ask all their challengers, "What did you know, and when did you know it", and "Have you given all your hard-drives to the FBI, as evidence in a possble criminal conspiracy"?

I went to http://www.fec.gov and http://www.thegreenpapers.com and clicked through to state General Election voter information pages. Here are the incumbent names, states and districts, Democratic challengers, and campaign homepage URLs:

See http://www.dailykos.com/comments/2006/9/30/212758/946/426#c426 for more details.

Here's where you can go to help some of these candidates. Most of these Democrats are on their own with very few resources. One doesn't even have a website!

IMO, what they need most is help with local media, press releases, photo-ops, etc. IMO, their only hope of gaining office for themselves is to ignite local media feeding frenzies to bloody up and then devour the coverup leadership. You can even find lists of links to their local media at the bottom of General Election webpages for their states at http://www.thegreenpapers.com .

19. Hastert himself has the responsibility to decide who gets to be pages...
Edited on Tue Oct-03-06 12:08 AM by calipendence
Ultimately, according to this article:

http://www.timesgazette.com/main.asp?SectionID=1&SubSectionID=1&ArticleID=139676&TM=32985.93

It is Hastert's decision as to who decides on the final selection of pages from those nominated by members. Therefore he has a central role and responsibility over which of these kids are in the program, not just for having covered up what was going on. 44 of the current class of 66 pages were nominated by Republican members of the House.

7/26/2006 9:06:00 AM
Page program provides opportunities

The congressional page program is a wonderful learning opportunity for high school students to serve their country while seeing firsthand how our government works.

Pages can serve in one of four terms: the fall semester (September-January), the spring semester (February-June) or one of two three-to-four week summer sessions.

Selection is a very competitive process. Members select the most exceptional students with strong academic qualifications and a record of achievement in extracurricular activities or public service. The speaker of the House makes the final selection among those nominated by members.

The most recent "class" of Pages consisted of 66 students, 44 selected by Republican House members.

...

Josh recalled two of his favorite moments during his tenure as a page. One was watching the special ceremony to swear in Rep. Brian Bilbray, after he won California's 50th District. His other favorite memory is having his picture taken with House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert.

Pages are employees of the U.S. House of Representatives, and play an important role in the legislative process. Pages are required to live at the Page Residence Hall under the supervision of a director, assistant director and proctors who reside on the premises.

...

I also wonder if this is why he was so nervous about Gonzales asserting the administration's right to come in and arbitrarily search congress critters' offices. I wonder if this was one of the skeletons he was worried about showing up if his office were searched.
