Foley ballot notice headed for battle in Florida
MIAMI (Reuters).......Rules prohibit taking Foley's name off the ballot so close to the November 7 election. So the Republicans' replacement nominee, Joe Negron, asked election supervisors to post signs at the polls telling voters that ballots cast for Foley will actually go to Negron.
...
"There's nothing in statute that requires a notice to be posted in the polling place and there's nothing in statute that precludes a supervisor from posting a notice in the polling place," said Sterling Ivey, a spokesman for the Florida Division of Elections. Florida's state government is currently in the hands of Republicans.
...
The suggested language has been used in other such cases, and reads:

"Due to a withdrawal of a candidate after the Primary Election which resulted in the substitution of a new candidate by the respective party: In the race for Representative In Congress, District 16, any vote cast for Mark Foley (REP) shall be counted as a vote for Joe Negron (REP)."
...
The Democrats, whose candidate for Foley's district is Tim Mahoney, sent a letter to state elections Director Dawn Roberts on Wednesday saying such a notice would violate a law banning supervisors from favoring a particular party.

They asked Roberts to immediately send a letter instructing supervisors not to post any notices or include them in mailings with absentee ballots.

1. Here we go again: Let's make exceptions for the Republican Party.
Edited on Thu Oct-05-06 09:15 AM by AndyA
The Democratic Party doesn't get a break, ever. But the GOP, let's do all we can do accomodate their needs.

STOP THE DOUBLE STANDARDS.

A sign posted in a polling place about ANY candidate would certainly give that candidate precedence. Unless, of course, they specify *WHY* Foley (R-FL, Pedophile) is no longer running. Then, perhaps they should make an exception to remind voters what snakes the GOP are.

2. Why does he get Foley's votes?
Is that typically how things are done - doesn't seem appropriate, IMHO.

12. The party choses the successor. Here's the language-
In the event that death, resignation, withdrawal, removal, or any other cause or event should cause a party to have a vacancy in nomination which leaves no candidate for an office from such party, the Department of State shall notify the chair of the appropriate state, district, or county political party executive committee of such party; and, within 5 days, the chair shall call a meeting of his or her executive committee to consider designation of a nominee to fill the vacancy.... If the name of the new nominee is submitted after the certification of results of the preceding primary election, however, the ballots shall not be changed and the former party nominee's name will appear on the ballot. Any ballots cast for the former party nominee will be counted for the person designated by the political party to replace the former party nominee.

3. I think its a great idea
JOE NEGRON IS THE REPUBLICAN ON THE BALLOT
BECAUSE THE PREVIOUS REPUBLICAN ON THE BALLOT
RESIGNED HIS SEAT IN CONGRESS BECAUSE
HE SENT PERVERTED EMAILS TO UNDERAGE MALES
NO DOUBT REFLECTING THE "VALUES" OF REPUBLICAN VOTERS.

7. Let me try
" Joe Negron is replacing a Republican so sleazy that even his own mother wouldn't vote for him."

4. How about: "Casting a vote for the Republican pedophile on the ballot
will go to another Republican; we are not aware of any instances yet where he has committed a sexual act with a child."

8. Exactly. They'd post a notice that says they cannot guarantee that
voting for any Dem will not result in a pedophile being elected.

11. Maybe, just maybe, those Fox fauxs will come in handy
Maybe enough people saw the "D-FL" next to Foley's name, and they'll remember that when they go to vote and see his name, and figure the ballot is misprinted or something. Maybe then they'll be so confused that they won't check the box next to Foley's name, and will either choose someone else or abstain.

Maybe?

13. Not likely
:-) Foley is so well known in this area, I'll bet even most high school kids know who he is. He has always been one very visible politician. Everyone in his district who votes, or even thinks about voting, knows exactly who he is, and knows about the ballot situation with Negron. Lots of people know Foley personally.

14. No Problem: just write his name in!
why all the hub bub?......I got my ballot and checked it out.....there are spaces for write ins for these races............

So I don't see the need for all this fuss.........if the GOP voters are too stupid to do that..then they shouldn't VOTE!
