Mandela to receive a belated apology
Penelas, now a candidate for the US Senate, is sucking up every which way he can :puke: :puke: :puke:

<clips>

Miami-Dade Mayor Alex Penelas says he will apologize at next week's NAACP national convention in Miami Beach for the county's snubbing of South African leader Nelson Mandela 13 years ago, which triggered a costly tourism boycott.

Penelas, a Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate, was a Hialeah councilman in 1990 when numerous public officials rebuffed black leaders' request to publicly acknowledge Mandela's visit.

He said he would reiterate comments he made in 1999 in New York City when he made a pitch to NAACP leaders to bring the convention to Miami.

''I think this community totally mishandled the Mandela visit. It's part of how we have matured,'' Penelas said Monday.

5. Will Mandela get an apology from Cheney?
...For Cheney voting to urge that Mandela be kept in jail back when Cheney was in Congress?

Nah. Probably not.

4. That's all right, we gave Nelson a party in Detroit at that time
We filled up Tiger Stadium, most of the politicians at the time were there and it was great. Former Gov. Jim Blanchard was one of the first to order state government divestment and passed some very strong laws to that effect. Howard Wolpe, former congressman, was also very infuential in helping Mandela get released from prison. Motown bands played for him and it was a very special reception that Mr. Mandela received in our city.
