Al Gore Stars In TV Ad Supporting California Prop 87 (VIDEO)

NBC4, L.A.: Al Gore Stars In TV Ad Supporting Prop 87
October 9, 2006

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. -- A pro-Proposition 87 commercial featuring former Vice President Al Gore -- his first television advertisement since he last ran for office -- will be unveiled Monday at a Palm Springs hotel.

Prop. 87's "Energy Security" commercial "explains our dangerous dependence on oil and the impact it has on our environment and national security," according to a statement issued by Wesley Cole, chairman of ExperienceGREEN, an environmental media company based in Palm Springs.

Prop. 87 aims to reduce the state's petroleum usage by 25 percent over 10 years. By taxing big oil companies, Prop. 87 would raise $4 billion to encourage the development of alternative fuels and technology over the next decade.

Opponents of the proposition say the oil companies would pass the cost along to consumers and that taxing California production would diminish output and increase imports.

Proponents like Gore say the proposition would help California cut its reliance on foreign oil and be good for the environment....

1. Good enough for me!
I thought it was a good prop, but there's so much misleading info involved with various propositions that I wasn't sure.

President Gore's endorsement is all I need.

2. fwiw, Prop. prohibits producers from passing tax on to consumers:
Obviously, enforcement and verification are another issue, but the prohibition is written into the Prop.

5. Oil companies have spent over $60M to defeat Prop 87
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2006/10/09/politics/p182220D73.DTL&type=politics

Oil tax fight becomes state's most expensive initiative campaign

In any other year, a $60 million opposition campaign fueled by a deep-pockets industry would spell nearly certain doom for a California ballot initiative.

It still might. But the fight over Proposition 87, the oil-production tax, could be different. The infusion of $40 million by a Hollywood producer has given environmentalists pushing the initiative the financial firepower to respond punch-for-punch to the global petroleum companies that oppose it.

(snip)

The campaigns for and against the measure have raised $104.4 million, according to campaign finance records at the secretary of state's office reviewed Monday. That amount surpasses the pharmaceutical industry's lobbying in last year's special election on two prescription drug measures and a $93 million contest in 1998 by Indian tribes to legalize tribal gambling.

7. I hope we pass 87 and it does raise the damn gas prices
Asking nicely does not seem to get a lot of idiots from driving their gas guzzlers. Raise the prices on gas and give tax breaks for driving Hybrids.

12. I disagree
this bill sucks and it will drive oil companies out of CA therefore we will have to bring in more foreign oil at what cost they desire since we will be at their "mercy" even more. Also the panel of political idiots will be paid whether they accomplish anything or not.
I'm voting NO.

This is a path of good intentions, nothing more.

13. Then why has the oil lobby
spent $60 million to try and defeat this? That's 4 times the annual budget of AIPAC which people feel has undue influence. On one proposition in one state. APIPAC very much wants this to go away.
