Four top doctors arrested over illegal human experimentation

Four senior doctors at Kaplan Hospital in Rehovot and Hartzfeld Geriatric Hospital in Gedera suspected of illegally experimenting on humans were arrested Monday.

The national fraud squad has opened an investigation into the affair. The four are suspected of abuse, aggravated assault, causing death through negligence, fraud, forgery, breach of statutory duty, and disruption of legal proceedings.

The Tel Aviv Magistrate's Court on Monday extended by three days the remands of Kaplan-Hartzfeld deputy director Dr. Shmuel Levi and Dr. Nadia Kagensky. The third suspect, Dr. Alona Smirnov, was released to house arrest for five days, and the fourth suspect was released following an investigation.

Police searched the houses of all four suspects and confiscated incriminating documents.

How COULD these doctors stoop this terribly, terribly LOW? From the article:

According to a report issued by the investigations department of the Health Ministry and exposed by Haaretz, the hospitals in Gedera and Rehovot conducted illegal and unethical testing on thousands of elderly patients for years.

During one of the incidents described, twelve patients died either during the experiments or shortly after they took place, but these incidents were not reported to the Health Ministry or investigated, as is required by law.

According to the report, some doctors received promotions, both in their professional and academic careers, on the basis of the illegal tests. In some cases, the tests were used as the basis for research studies published in local and international medical journals.

At least four doctors at the hospitals were named as experts in Geriatrics based on the illegal tests they allegedly conducted along with their colleagues.

(CBS/AP) A 14-year-old boy kicked and punched by guards at a juvenile boot camp died because the sheriff's officials suffocated him, a medical examiner said Friday, contradicting a colleague who blamed the death on a usually benign blood disorder.

“Martin Anderson's death was caused by suffocation due to actions of the guards at the boot camp,” said Dr. Vernard Adams, who conducted the second autopsy.

Adams said the suffocation was caused by hands blocking the boy's mouth, as well as the “forced inhalation of ammonia fumes” that caused his vocal cords to spasm, blocking his upper airway. The guards had said in an incident report that they used ammonia capsules to keep Anderson conscious.

The autopsy report draws no conclusions about whether Anderson's death was a homicide or an accident.

as they dragged him around, did NOT revive after they threw cup after cup of water on him, didn't seem to affect that woman in any way whatsoesver.

It really looked like an intentional killing, as she DID stand there, up close, and observed the entire murder without moving to help him.

Our right wingers and nut cases donate vast amounts of money to their right wingers and nut cases. (Among other things, our crazier fundies want their crazier fundies to re-build Solomon's Temple and start offering ritual sacrifices again.) Given the size of Israel, it doesn't take lot of outside money to really twist their electoral politics. There is a nice feed-back loop because then Israeli right wingers come over and support our right wingers. There is a real threat to Israel from the surrounding states, but these guys are not interested in an equitable solution, only an unobtainable victory.

Knowing how crazy some of the generals were back then, I can believe that the US did finance a set of "experiments". On the other hand, this entire story may be as bogus as those claiming the World Trade Center was deliberately blown up by Bush and company.


It's worth an entire thread, but the things done back in the 50's with X-rays and other forms of radiation in the name of health are unbelievable. How about X-ray machines at the local shoe store to ensure a proper fit? My sister has a large scar on her leg from the radiation treatment used to remove a birth mark. It was a combination of the generals trying to assure us that we could all survuve a nuclear war and of medical doctors trying out a new tool to see if they could fix things with it.

if you can wrap your mind around such a thing. (There were actually Irish Fascists as well, "Blue Shirts") We all would like to forget that eugenics was considered a very respectable science at the time. It makes sense that there are still people around who consider it right and proper that the old and infirm be "allowed" to contribute to the greater good by being used as guinea pigs. Too much of the medical establishment is still tuned to the notion that the doctor is the one who knows all and is to be allowed to proceed unquestioned.
