Probably busy reporting Bush's destruction of habeas corpus as simply the "President's Anti-Terrorism Bill", as did my local TV news station yesterday. Shame on you, NBC4 out of Washington, D.C. I expected better from you.

7. US Deaths in Vietnam and Iraq by Month
Compared to Vietnam, we've already lost more soldiers in Iraq for the equivalent time period.

This is the time to cut out losses, not after the peak. This is the lesson we must draw from Vietnam.

10. Bullshit
We never had anywhere close to 140,000 troops in RVN until mid-summer 1965, meaning that chart should begin at year 4.

Figures lie. And liars figure.

US troop deaths in Vietnam were at a higher number throughout the war when we had comparable numbers of troops involved. This war is bad enough. We don't need to make up bullshit lies in order to damn it.

18. Nice deflection
Obviously, I never claimed that people weren't killed in Vietnam prior to the arrival of officially designated combvat units in March 1965. That would be absurd, which is, of course, why you dishonestly attribute that position to me. It seems clear that you cannot deal honestly with my REAL position, which is that the two time periods in question aren't comparable because the NUMBER of troops in country during the first three years of each conflict was not comparable. Until March 1965, the US had anywhere from 15,000-20,000 personnel in the RVN, most in an advisory positions. The Marine landing at DaNang in March 1965 added 3,500 combat troops (ostensibly to guard the air bases used in Rolling Thunder), and this quickly increased with deployments of the 4th ID and 1st Air Cavalry through that summer. By December 1965, there were 180,000 troops in country. Just as an additional note, by the time we were at 140,000 troops, we had already seen one of the major conventional engagements of the war (Ia Drang Valley campaign of November 1965 - in which upwards of 200 troops were killed in two days of fighting). When we see something like that in Iraq, let me know. Even the bloody battles of Fallujah and Najaf come nowhere close to that fighting in terms of losses. Here's what your own source has to say about that (being much more honest than your context-less presentation here):

Note: I’m completely aware that this comparison is not normalized for number of US troops present in each conflict. This is not a comparison of death rate per unit of troop strength, and it doesn’t claim to be. If you want that, you’ll have to make a different graph. see US Deaths in Vietnam and Iraq by Month

But if it is NOT "normalized for number of US troops present in each conflict," (as your own source admits!) then it really tells us nothing at all.

13. Violence in Iraq Kills 10 U.S. Soldiers
Violence in Iraq Kills 10 U.S. Soldiers

By Ellen Knickmeyer
Washington Post Foreign Service
Wednesday, October 18, 2006; 5:48 AM

BAGHDAD, Oct. 18-Ten U.S. soldiers were killed in Iraq on Tuesday, one of the bloodiest days of the war for American forces outside of major combat operations.

The toll included four soldiers killed by a single bomb in Baghdad, and another soldier killed by small-arms fire in the Iraqi capital, the U.S. military said.

North of Baghdad, a soldier was killed when the vehicle he was riding in was struck by an improvised-explosive device, the military said.

Three soldiers died in the northern province of Diyala and one Marine in the western province of Anbar. The U.S. military gave no details of those deaths, saying only that they came in "enemy action.''

<SNIP>

October is on track to become one of the deadliest of the conflict for U.S. soldiers, with at least 60 soldiers killed so far this month. More than 2,700 American troops and Defense Department employees have died since the war began 3 1/2 years ago.

15. And Dick Cheney laughed -the rule is
Always for the war but never in it-

"Cheney was of military age and a supporter of the Vietnam War but he did not serve in the war, applying for and receiving five draft deferments. On May 19, 1965, Cheney was classified as 1-A , "available for service" by the Selective Service. On October 26, 1965 the Selective Service lifted the constraints on drafting childless married men. Cheney and his wife then had a child after which he applied for and received, a reclassification of 3-A, gaining him a final draft deferment.

In an interview with George C. Wilson that appeared in the April 5, 1989 issue of The Washington Post, when asked about his deferments the future Defense Secretary said, "I had other priorities in the '60s than military service." -from Wikipedia

21. How does anyone associated with this sleep at night?
Answer: on 800-count french cotton linen.

While our soldiers toil night and day in the dust of Iraq and Afghanistan, the aristocracy wines, dines and affords their lifestyle at the expense of others.

One can only hope that 2006 will welcome a change in Washington and get our men and women out of this mess and repair the war-torn country that we have devastated.

26. "with an average of three Americans dying every day, " BBC

Iraq attacks kill 10 US soldiers
The United States military in Iraq says a marine and nine soldiers have been killed in Iraq, including four in a roadside bombing near Baghdad.

The blast struck the soldiers' vehicle as they travelled west of the capital.

Three more were killed in the restive Diyala province, north of Baghdad. The three others died in separate attacks.

The deaths come as US-led forces in Iraq experience a surge in casualties in insurgency attacks; more than 60 US troops have been killed this month.

The BBC's Andrew North in Baghdad says that, with an average of three Americans dying every day, this is one of the highest casualty rates sustained by US troops since January 2005.

The US military gave no further details about the deaths in Diyala, apart from saying they occurred during operations in the province.

All the fatalities happened on Tuesday. The US military usually announces deaths the following day.

31. I wonder...
I'm still thinking about the ammo dump blast and the virtual news blackout about any possible deaths or caualties caused by the blast.

Someone mentioned that Iraqi sources say a dozen or more actually died there.

Are today's figures actually just a partial count of those deaths from the ammo dump? Are they releasing the the deaths little by little?

36. My co-worker's take on this
"It's a war. People die."
Amazing how blithe people can be when it's so theoretical.
Not so for me. My son goes back for his third tour in January.
I'm not agreeable to the "It's a war, people die" philosophy that rightwingers, safe at home, so freely expouse.
Cheney had what, five deferments?
I think underneath that smirking mask, he knows the reality. And that's why he scrambled away from service in Viet Nam. Which is fine, I can understand not wanting to serve in Viet Nam. Except now he, and so many other rightwingers, swagger around like warriors.
I find this behavior despicable and totally amoral.
