Burns: President keeping war plan quiet ("Shhh, its a secret!")
HELENA, Mont. - Sen. Conrad Burns says he believes President Bush has a plan to win the war in Iraq but is keeping it quiet, a statement Democrats pounced on Wednesday as reminiscent of comments made during another divisive war.

Burns, at a debate Tuesday night with Democratic challenger Jon Tester, said he believes Bush has a plan to win — but added: "we're not going to tell you what our plan is."

Burns, who has said repeatedly the country must stay in Iraq as long as it takes to win the war, also seemed to suggest a new path may be needed in Iraq. He pointed to fellow Republican Sen. John Warner of Virginia, who has recently called for a new strategy in Iraq.

...snip...

Democrats likened Burns' comments to statements by President Nixon that led to news reports that he had a "secret plan" to end or win the war in Vietnam. Like Nixon, Burns never used the word "secret" but made it clear it wasn't in the president's or the country's interest to discuss any plans he has for winning the war.

Ya know...I think that "secret plan to win the war" line works better when the other party started the war in the first place...

3. What the fuck is this? Double-Secret Probation or something?
What a fuckwad. DAMN I hope Montana voters do the proper thing!

It'd be good for them to remind people like him that he works for THEM. And he's ANSWERABLE TO THEM. It's NOT the other way around.

4. Good. Now whenever they say the Dems have no plan, we can laugh...
...in their faces and say we just don't want to give away secrets to the ter'rists.

6. They never had a plan...
And still don't. Moreover, this bunch WANTS the horrible situation in Iraq to continue, so they can keep trying to scare the American people with "Terra! Terra! Terra!"

If Bush DOES have a "secret plan" why isn't he using it to save some lives? Answer: there is no "plan." They don't even want a plan that could work.

But, given that a large percentage of the public disapproves of the Iraq war, they have to say (not do!) something.

7. In 1968 Richard Nixon said he had a plan to end the Vietnam War
...but it was a secret. He got elected and the war continued for seven years more costing tens of thousands of American lives, billions of dollars and hundreds of thousands of Southeast asians killed and disabled for life. In the end, Nixon threw in the towel, resigned the presidency in disgrace in August 1974, Gerald Ford took office as president declared victory for the U.S. policy and Nixon Doctrine called "Vietnamization", so the democratic controlled congress voted to withhold all further support of the war in December 1974, turned the running of the war over to the South Vietnamese military and withdrew all U.S. support. South Vietnam fell to the communist North in less than than four months after that officially ending on April 30, 1975.

Bush is repeating the same republican bullshit, except it is not going to be that simple in Iraq, nor the rest of the middle east and North Korea.

18. Nixon's "secret plan" to end the war in Vietnam actually
meant expanding the war to Cambodia and Laos (nominally neutral before Nixon's invasion and occupation).

Bush's "secret plan" to win in Iraq probably features expanding the war to Iran and/or Syria. QED.

8. If he had any plan then why did he say this?
Edited on Wed Oct-18-06 01:25 PM by teryang
If the generals in the field have any suggestions, then we'd be willing to consider them, or words to that effect. This comment was on all the news channels within the last 48 hours.

The only plan is to balkanize the middle east. It the same strategy used against Russia and Yugoslavia. It continues to be used against Russia, Iraq, and Iran today. It facilitates the armaments industry, the drug trade, supports western banking interests, and serves to control world access to energy.

Or, a parody of a Bond villain, somebody on the ineptness scale of, say, Dr. Evil.

13. Why is it a secret?
They don't want the terrorists to know what's coming? I think the terrorists have pretty well sized up the ruling class of the United States and found them to be quite wanting. The insurgents in Iraq? Aren't these the folks we ostensibly invaded the country to liberate? The Democrats? The American people? Who isn't allowed to know what the plan is, if not the people paying for the war?

This is nonsensical bordering on the hysteric. If so many people weren't dying every day, there would be an almost comic aspect to this. As it is, our military is killing and dying to no purpose, and we're pouring buckets full of money down this rathole, all the while lowering our prestige in the world community, damaging our reputation perhaps beyond repair, and losing any pretense to credibility.

Thank you, Mr. Burns; thank you, Republicans.

19. NEWS FLASH: We've already LOST in Iraq. It's way too late
for any "plan" (secret or otherwise) to secure any reasonable strategic objectives (which is what I think "winning" means in this case).

The stench of death and defeat hangs over the entire Operation Iraqi Freedom.

17. This whole thing reminds me so much of "Dr. Strangelove: Or How I..."
...The full title is: "Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb" (1964)

By that I mean this the scene in the War Room, when they were talking about the formerly secret "Dooms Day machine" the Soviet Ambassador just told them about:

Dr. Strangelove: Of course, the whole point of a Doomsday Machine is lost, if you *keep* it a *secret*! Why didn't you tell the world, EH?

Ambassador de Sadesky: It was to be announced at the Party Congress on Monday. As you know, the Premier loves surprises.

Why does history have to repeat itself so soon? You would think they thought nobody tried this during the Vietnam War.

He's like Elmer Fudd: "Shh! Be vewwy vewey quiet! We have a secret plan to win the war!! Wouldn't want to tell you and spoil the surprise! "

Like they wouldn't tell us now and try to gin up support and votes before the election.
