Iran must be intimidated, says Israeli leader
by Ron Bousso

MOSCOW (AFP) - Visiting Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert stepped up rhetoric against Iran, saying the its controversial nuclear program could be prevented through intimidation.

Speaking to reporters following meetings with President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin, Olmert said he had told Putin that "there was no chance of preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear arms if Iran is not afraid.

"The Iranians should be afraid that something they don't want to happen will occur," he said.

Olmert went on to say that "I made it clear why in my opinion it is important that the Iranians are afraid," but he fell short of mentioning what measures that be taken against the Islamic state.

16. Pooty-Poot is helping Iran with its nuclear program
There are Russian engineers and scientists in Iran helping with the construction and production of its nuclear program.

That's one gift horse Putin won't be putting down.

17. Well, yeah.
But nobody is going to bait Pooty-poot about it. He will view the matter with alarm and wring his hands and spew all sorts of polite, well-meaning bullshit and keep right on doing what he has been doing. Just like Ehud does, only better at it.

And politically, in power terms, Ehud has nothing, he just looks weak and stupid doing this. He'd do better to hold his tongue.

9. Ehud Olmert in drag! That will frighten Iran!
I expect the Israel Lobby to take a cue from the Beirut Mad Bomber and start exerting pressure on Congress to "frighten" Iran. Shall we all don Halloween masks?

13. But isn't the use of fear for political ends called terrorism?
And isn't sewing terror to win a war on terror a contradiction?

18. They look afraid, ahyup.
The Iranians are definately caving in terror. Pffft.

They know any aggressive action against them will simply ruin the political position - and possibly the military - of the aggressor. Their immediate neighbors are proof enough of that.

21. Olmert should be working on the release of Ehud Goldwasser & Eldad Regev
from their Hizbollah captors, and Gilad Shalit from his Palestinian captors. That's where Olmert's focus ought to be, and not beating the drums for another war that will result in more death and destruction.

24. Putin cool to Olmert's Iran plea
---

Interests

Asked afterwards in a briefing with Israeli reporters whether he was disappointed by Putin's silence or had received private assurances, Olmert replied that he was convinced Putin is "very concerned" Iran might acquire nuclear capabilities.

Alexei Malashenko, a Middle East expert at the Moscow Carnegie Centre, said Russia would continue to hold out against imposing sanctions on Tehran, to safeguard its strong commercial interests and independent role in the Middle East.

"Russia will resist until the end. If it backs down and decides to make concessions, it will lose its image in the Muslim world," he said.

Western concerns about Russia's role in the Iranian standoff grew last month after Moscow caved in to Iranian pressure and agreed, by March, to ship nuclear fuel to the atomic power plant it is building in Iran.
