Calif. city may bar illegal immigrants from renting

Wed Oct 18, 2006 4:15 PM ET

By Tim Gaynor

ESCONDIDO, California (Reuters) - Local authorities in this California city are set to vote on a controversial measure on Wednesday to prohibit landlords from renting to illegal immigrants, a law opponents say is racist.

(snip)

If approved on Wednesday it would come into effect in 30 days in the community of 140,000 residents, where more than a third of the population is Hispanic.

"The federal government has failed to act on illegal immigration, so we are having to deal with it directly ourselves," said Councilwoman Marie Waldron, who proposed the ordinance.

(snip)

"It's a racist a document and it has set people in this community against one another," said Councilman Ron Newman, who opposed the ordinance along with the city's mayor, Lori Holt Pfeiler.

The ordinance would require landlords to hand over documentation on their tenants' immigration status to city authorities and evict illegal immigrant tenants or face penalties including suspension of their business licenses and fines.

2. Isn't it already illegal to harbor an illegal immigrant?
Pandering to hate is so silly.

16. No. The current CA rental housing law looks like this:
The landlord or thier representative is required to get a SSN or taxpayer ID (which is available to undocumented immigrants) with no preference for one over another. Of course, illegal aliens either have fake SSNs and ID (they need them to get aboveboard work anyhow) or will get thier documented sister, cousin or whatever to rent the place and then you barely see her anymore and they move in. Legally, you have to give the same degree of scrutiny to everybody, and CA law limits charges for background and credit checks on applicants to $30, so everybody gets a rather half-assed background check.

3. And these people would go where, precisely?
And do what, exactly?

The nastiness is unrestrained.

In Poland, before the war, restrictions like this began to be put in place, little things, and then more and more....finally Jews weren't even allowed to ride bicycles let along hold jobs.

Then, once they had been completely separated from society, they were rounded up and killed.

I'm just not seeing the difference, really. I'm just not.

4. This isn't racist...
I'm sure Brits and French who come here illegally would face the same restrictions under this law.

Oh that's right...they don't want to come here. Wonder why?

7. Pardon me a moment, and I know this is anecdotal; however
a full quarter of people I personally know in the publishing industry are native to the UK. Plenty of Brits, Irish and Scots want to come here and work.

14. I doubt it
They come here for the jobs, not the living arrangements. They will just live on the streets.

Our local paper last year did a story about 2 brothers from Guatamela who were living under a bridge here because they didn't want to spend their money on rent.

If you want them to go back where they came from, take away the jobs.

15. I heard that they already did this in San Clemente
about a month ago. Once someone starts it, the precident carries like wildfire.

>>"It's a racist a document and it has set people in this community against one another,"<<

That's what this cruel Fascist Regime is all about. Setting people against each other,
creating a Class War, separating the wealthy and stomping on the poor.
The ReThugs have no regard for anyone but themselves.

We are living in such horrible times.
I don't think that there's a day that goes by anymore that I'm not shocked about something.
