Angelides Urges Gov. to Release Tapes
snip>
In the letter, the Angelides campaign offered more detail about what Schwarzenegger said in unguarded moments in his office than has been made public to date......the campaign has declined to release the tapes on its own, calling on Schwarzenegger to take that step.

"Instead of hiding behind his handlers, he should publicly release these records so that the people of the state of California can hear for themselves what the governor believes in candid moments away from the spotlight," Angelides campaign attorney Lance Olson wrote.
...
In the letter Friday, Olson rebuts Schwarzenegger's claim that the tapes are exempt from disclosure under a legal provision that protects the governor's internal "deliberations."

Olson writes that the recordings "do not relate to anything 'deliberative' at all and are clearly unrelated to speech writing but, rather, discuss Republican Party politics, derogatory remarks about Mexican Americans and observations about legislators and other public figures."

Were Schwarzenegger to demean Mexican Americans, it could produce a backlash.

1. You know he's demeaned Mexican Americans
the question is has anybody recorded it and can they be persuaded to come forward. I'm very disappointed with the media here in CA they seem to give this fuckin ape a pass on everything he's fucked up. A "macaca moment" would change the dynamics of this governor's race that's for sure, and though I'm not impressed with Angelides anythings better than the titzengrabber.

6. media, schmedia - Angeledes simply has no chance, sez me.
It's not just the media.
Angeledes has no chance of winning this election, as much as it pains me to say it.

Now, I like S. so little that I don't take the time to spell his name. No way am I voting for him -- I'm still peeved that he vetoed the universal health care bill. I know he's not a man of the people.

But my take on this is that California is different than the rest of the country. The Governor of California simply cannot survive as a staunch conservative. S. got a whipping by Californians at his special election. He was taught that he has to color inside the lines. So he threw us a couple of bones, and the people seem to be more comfortable with him.

Then consider that as smart, well-meaning and good with numbers as Angeledes may be, he's a wimp next to S. I'm sorry but no matter what he comes up with, it sounds like whining. My local Dem. party was sending out newsletters actually using the word "Ahnold" -- please, what a turn-off.

Angeledes is as charismatic as Gray Davis, and the last thing California wants is another Gray Davis.

25. so what?
   :nopity:
I'm a reality-based citizen.

If you're so concerned about this, don't cry to me. I'm voting for Angeledes. Call Angeledes and tell him that what he should be doing is getting in our face about the horrible things S. did that he's AGAINST, like shipping prisoners out of state away from their families. Case in point:

26. I have no doubt Gov. Angelides will do right by the prisoners...but...
you really think he's going to win this election by going against Arnold on prisoners' rights??? Really???

If you do, that explains a great deal.

30. He'll win if he takes a real stand on ANYTHING
right now he only whines and makes weak statements about "how I care about your children."
Dude sounds like he is running for Town Council.

Even his commercial smacks of "has-been".
I can quote it from memory:
"In 1967 a young man saw a sign that changed his life..."
Its message comes across as: "vote for me! I was there!"
Dangit, and now I have that song in my head.

This thing about prisoners being shipped away from their families is only the latest in awful decisions S. has made that are bad for Californians. Angeledes is the treasurer, for crying out loud, how about some expertise? He should understand how much it costs and raise suspicions about the no-bid contracts and have an idea of how to do it better, don't you think?

What's wrong with prisoners' rights anyway? Have you followed the stories about how awfully our prisoners are being treated? Now they're going to be moved away from their families. Now THAT is rehabilitation for you!

So again, Angeledes would do better if he took a stand on anything. There's a whole buffet of scandals to choose from that are much more important than whether he can get on the Jay Leno show or who Arnold gossips about.

And as for your ad hominem attack, I told you I'm voting for the guy. Your blind partisan devotion explains a lot, too, 1932.

32. Yeah. Going head to head with Arnold on who's going to treat prisoners
better is going to win this election for Phil.

You should be a professional campaign advisor.

You're full of good ideas.

3. I'm no fan of Ahnuld....
but Angelides seems to be grasping at straws. He has run a horrible campaign and is lagging in the polls. I live in Southern California and every time I turn on the TV, I see one ad over and over and over. It's a Schwarzenegger ad that shows Phil Angelides walking backwards and blasts the guy for all his shortcomings. Everyone I ask about the upcoming gubernatorial election knows this ad. It's been burned into our collective minds.

And where have Phil's ads been? The only ad I've seen is one where Arnold is standing with Dubya, saying "George W. Bush" over and over. Great ad. Very effective. The problem is that it doesn't even mention Phil Angelides.

Many people in California dislike Arnold, but they don't even know who's running against him. As much as I hate to say this, I think he'll win reelection.

I plan to vote for Angelides, and will encourage others to do the same, but I don't really think that's going to be enough to propel the guy to victory.

So he can go ahead and try to get as many tapes released as he wants. At this point, it will likely play out just like the last-minute '00 campaign news that Bush was arrested for drunk driving. Intended to produce a wave of controversy, it created a ripple. A very small one.

4. I said this to someone else recently:
What's so hard about saving the criticisms for AFTER the election and let those of us who believe that Angelides can win enjoy ourselves here at DEMOCRATIC Underground for the next few weeks without having to endure the headaches of having to read posts like this one?

I promise you that if, after election day, and Angelides loses, I will not accuse you of having 20:20 hindsight if you say that you knew all along that he was going to lose.

Edited on Sat Oct-21-06 01:17 PM by 1932
you think the Democrat running against the Republican sucks. There's actually a DU rule on this -- this isn't a place for criticizing Democratic candidates between the primary and the general election.

It's a reasonable rule, don't you think?

What do you lose by having to wait a few weeks to talk about this?

35. It is and you don't have to march
lock step with anyone. Just ask me, I'm renowned for it. The rules state you cannot CAMPAIGN for another party on this board -- not that you can't criticize them. Too many here get those confused. They're looking for an echo chamber and this ain't it.

I have to correct you on something, however. Angelides is anything but a whiner. The man actually has a brain and a damned good one. The problem, of course, has to do with the MSM media who, beginning in August, began blasting Ahnie movies all over the airwaves and giving Angelides NO time on the tube. The man's just not a natural politician. Ahnie's used to pleasing the public. And finally, what will really put Ahnie back in the Governor's mansion, is that too many brain dead people in this state think it's cool having the "terminator" as their governor. As sad as that statement is, it's the absolute truth.

14. Sorry but I feel I need to say something..
I feel I need to speak my mind..that's what this place should be about. Yes, I would love to see a Democratic Governor in my state but many Democrats I have talked to the past few weeks are actually voting for Arnold. The Hollywood community also seems to be backing Arnold now that he is supporting stem cell, a cleaner environment, and Clooney's Darfur effort. These things may be just for show but apparantly it is winning over many Californians~even Democrats.

As already stated, Angelides just reminds too many Californians of a Gray Davis redux. I'm not throwing in the towel but it just seems foolish to ignore reality.

he will get re-elected because people are star-struck and decades of the press telling them "there's no difference" has people believing that what matters is that our governor be KNOWN...never mind what he does :puke:

I haven't heard 1 peep from my local Dem mailing lists about this problem.
No personal message from Angeledes. Just name-calling about "Ahnold".

CA is the most Internet-connected state in the country! He can put out videos online for a fraction of the cost of TV commercials.

Angeledes has ways to tell us he's not getting any airtime.
Imagine how we all would rise up to that challenge.

Edited on Sat Oct-21-06 03:39 PM by 0rganism
Democrats need to field a candidate with some star power served with a heaping side order of political wonkishness, and have the common sense not to destroy him/her in the primary.

It's going to take someone like George Clooney or Robin Williams to unseat A.S., for reasons which I hope are becoming obvious to the CA Democratic party by now. And no, that does not include the Baldwin brothers.

Arnold has way more money with the oil companies and all the other corporate whores funding his campaign. that's why he is filling the airwaves with his shit.

you think Angelides doesn't know what is going on ? he was on some radio show where he knew exactly what is going on. he is doing what he can. he beat Arnold's ass in the debates, he has some nice ads out there. he is doing what he can. he is out there every fucking day actively campaigning.

while some idiots on here who love to follow the right wing media are bashing him.

and anytime Angelides does call out what is going on asses on here start attacking him as being a whiner. stupid asses.
