Afghan president appoints team after 60 said killed
in NATO strikes
http://sg.news.yahoo.com/061026/1/44byx.html

President Hamid Karzai has appointed a commission to investigate claims that at least 60 civilians were killed in military strikes by NATO forces targeting Taliban fighters.

Karzai said in a statement Thursday he was "deeply touched" by reports that civilians had been killed and injured in International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) bombardments in the southern province of Kandahar on Tuesday.

The president issued a decree that "assigned an inquiry team to fully investigate the reports of civilian casualties during NATOs air operations in Panjwayi and Pashmul districts of Kandahar province," a statement said.

ISAF, accusing the Taliban of using civilians as human shields, said it was working with Afghan authorities to determine the number of civilian casualties. It has admitted four civilians were wounded.
