"SM&P Utility Resources Inc., a Laclede Group Inc. subsidiary based in Carmel, Ind., is planning to sack about 750 employees in the Midwest and Southwest, or 40 percent of its work force, after losing two big customers.

The layoffs will affect about 54 workers in the St. Louis area, according to a filing with the Missouri Department of Economic Development.

Rick Hargraves, a spokesman for Laclede, said SM&P decided to cut jobs after two utility companies declined to renew contracts in December. The company will start laying off the workers - none of whom are represented by unions - in mid-February, he said.

SM&P is one of the nation's largest companies that locates and marks underground cables, telephone lines, natural-gas pipes and other buried delivery systems used by utilities."
