Cheney forecasts lengthy violence in Iraq
WASHINGTON (AFP) - US Vice President Dick Cheney warned that deadly violence would plague Iraq for "some considerable period of time" and said it was up to Iraqis to decide how to tackle sectarian militias.

Asked about radical Iraqi cleric Moqtada al-Sadr and his Mahdi Army militia, Cheney told CNBC television that US-led forces had dealt with "the chief bad guy," Saddam Hussein, and that it was now up to Iraqis to handle Sadr.

Sadr "obviously speaks for a significant number of Iraqis, has a strong following. But if anything were to be addressed in that area, it's got to be addressed by the Iraqis themselves," Cheney said in the interview.

"The Iraqis are now the sovereign authority inside Iraq. That's their government. It's their responsibility. They'll have to make those judgments and decisions," he said.

The White House released a transcript of the exchange, which came as opposition Democrats used the unpopular war in Iraq as a political weapon in an effort to win control of the US Congress in November 7 elections.

4. What happened to all the foreign terrorists?
Aren't foreigners supposed to be the ones causing all the trouble over there so we don't have to fight them over here?

6. Did Cheney ever read the Just War Doctrine?
Four conditions that must be met.
1) Is the damage threatened to be inflicted by the aggressor on the nation or community of nations lasting, grave, or certain?
2) Are all other means of putting an end to the threat shown to be impractical or ineffective?
3) Are there serious prospects of success?
4) Does the action produce evils and disorders graver than the evil to be eliminated?

Doesn't look like this war qualifies. Oh well.

9. "Iraqis are now the sovereign authority inside Iraq"
So does that mean if they order the U.S. military off their land, we have no choice but to comply? And which Iraqis are the authority? The elected ones, or the ones with the most bang-bangs? And if it's the ones with the most bang-bangs, Mr. Cheney, why aren't we doing a better job of being careful who we hand out those weapons to?

17. Predictions of protracted deadly violence
These kind of predictions, none of them a surprise to anyone who paid attention to what real experts said before the invasion, should have been part of the national and congressional discussion pre-invasion. And now that the horse has left the barn, it's too late.

But it's not too late to investigate whether the administration knowingly withheld such predictions from Congress and the American public.

True leaders would have put it all on the table; incompetent leaders would have... well, we know what they did.

and we didn't even have an intelligence agency to cherrypick!

All I can say is, the press had better not try to feign surprise at how badly the bushistas have fucked this process -- no, wait, not just Iraq, the entire body of international diplomacy. Every treaty, every deal, every agreement, every detente, and every shred of trust built up since WWII is put in jeopardy by these blood-soaked greedheads.

Sort of forgot that some of us were predicting this in 2003, eh? What was that you said? Oh, I remember: I look at weeks, maybe months, certainly not years.

I guess reality really does have a liberal bias.
