CDC: Salmonella Sickens 172 In 18 States

ATLANTA -- A salmonella outbreak potentially linked to produce has sickened at least 172 people in 18 states, health officials said Monday.

Health officials think the bacteria may have spread through some form of produce -- the list of suspects includes tomatoes. But the illnesses have not been tied to any specific product, chain, restaurants or supermarkets.

No one has died in the outbreak, which stems from a common form of salmonella bacteria. Eleven people have been hospitalized, health officials said.

"We're very early in the investigation," said Dave Daigle, a spokesman for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

ago. Autopsy was inconclusive--can't help but wonder if this is the source, and therefore, the first death. Thanks for posting this.

5. I'm glad I'm a Meatarian!

With all the news of vegetable-related illnesses in the news, it's time we all "went Carn" (-ivorous). With vegetables, there's just too much of a chance of e. coli, blood sugar disorders, and Mad Daffodil Disease.

I haven't eaten a "veggie" in three years, and I've never been healthier. I have no cholesterol; my blood sugar is is -60, and it's all Beefose. I've also lost 90 pounds and 50 kilograms -- each!

Please! Think of the Children! Love your little flowering friends, don't eat them! (Unless you have a good recipe.)

There's no way to know the extent of the problem, let a lone the cause, unless and until the people are informed and provide feedback.

I agree with the Meatatarian (ottherwise known as carnivore). This might be a clever ploy to discredit vegans, but considering that I'm always anemic anyway....

Just cook your food. Raw Fooders will have to bite it for a while, but all these outbreaks only affect those who eat the suspect produce raw. Cooking kills e-coli, sam and ella, etc.

I'm assuming the meatarian doesn't eat much kibbee (raw beef).

This is what happens when large corporate farmers get out of hand with their livestock. Their over-populated animals contaminate the groundwater (and rivers and streams), which they use to water their produce fields.

Poof! Instant bacteria! Why is anyone surprised?

People suck (and not in that groovy, happy way). :(

...I DO have to mention that safe handling of foods is essential in any kitchen. (I was under the assumption that it was common sense.)

Of course, one wouldn't HAVE to think of such things when it cam to produce if our agriculture infrastructure wasn't so bassackwards.

13. hell I know people who do not appropriately handle the food they eat

they don't wash fruit or vegetables.
They keep stuff way past due dates and leave even meat dishes out too long and then refrigerate, leave out and refrigerate... (shudder)

I know of a couple who is constantly sick and when I saw how they handled food I knew why.

Hell even people who own certain pets are at higher risk for salmonella...especially if they don't wash their hands.

Some very nasty "stomach viri". I just saw the symptoms for Salmonilla and they were spot on.

As a diabetic I try to eat a lot of raw veggies. How does one clean them? Won't cold water just spread the nasties around?

What is one to do? Any suggestions?

it'll kill any nasties. Its totally harmless to people and animals. It will disinfect your house safely and effectively, treat any infections, use it as mouthwash, use it for deodorant, bathe in it, drink it. Spray it on your veggies. 15. Hubby thinks he picked up his case in Philadelphia airport

He had classic symptoms of salmonella about the time of the outbreak. He happened to be traveling earlier that day, and ate chicken salad during his layover in Philadelphia. Since Philly's a hub for US Air, I wonder if this could explain the widespread nature of the outbreak, across many states?
