Michael J. Fox's newfound political stardom met a hungry audience of Democratic activists and fans in Des Moines Monday, as the actor brought to Iowa the national attention he has recently earned stumping for advocates of expanded stem cell research.

"Restricting one of the most promising areas of research is short-sighted," Fox told more than 1,000 Democratic activists, college students and stem cell research advocates at Drake University's Olmsted Center. "We have no way of knowing where the next breakthrough will emerge."

Democratic candidate for governor Chet Culver and his Republican opponent, U.S. Rep. Jim Nussle, disagree over whether Iowa should lift its ban on a type of research involving the creation of human embryos.

The issue is among several that divide the candidates in what is viewed as one of the nation's most competitive gubernatorial races this year. That's what prompted Fox to get involved.
