McGovern says Dems need to end Iraq war

LINCOLN, Neb. -- George McGovern, the former senator and Democratic presidential candidate, said Thursday that he will meet with more than 60 members of Congress next week to recommend a strategy to remove U.S. troops from Iraq by June.

If Democrats don't take steps to end the war in Iraq soon, they won't be in power very long, McGovern told reporters before a planned speech at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

"I think the Democratic leadership is wise enough to know that if they're going to follow the message that election sent, they're going to have to take steps to bring the war to a conclusion," he said.

McGovern will present his recommendations before the Congressional Progressive Caucus, a 62-member group led by Reps. Lynn Woolsey and Barbara Lee.

2. absolutely-- ending the war against Iraq and impeaching...
...the war criminals Bush and Cheney should be at the top of the legislative agenda. Nothing else is as important to restoring the direction of democracy in America.

I stuffed envelopes for him in 1972 (at age 7)

He's a war hero, and a sensible human being. He's right... AGAIN!

8. IRAQ
Yes, I almost always vote for Democrats, and have never voted for a Republican thanks to my dad who was a union man all his life. But there is only one reason that I worked on campaigns and gave more money to candidates than I ever did before, even though I'm disabled and really can't afford it - IRAQ. I expect the Democratic congress to get our troops out of that hellhole - the sooner the better. And I don't mean the end of 2007. If the Democrats expect to win another election I expect to see the sky filled with empty planes headed to Baghdad.

Bring the troops home now.

McGovern to Meet With Congress on War

LINCOLN, Neb.

"I think the Democratic leadership is wise enough to know that if they're going to follow the message that election sent, they're going to have to take steps to bring the war to a conclusion," he said.

"I've talked with a lot of senior officers _ generals and admirals _ in preparation for this book, that say this war can't be won, that the problems now are not military problems," McGovern told reporters. "There isn't going to be any decisive victory in Iraq."

(snip)

"Never let the new class of Democrats forget that they're there in considerable part because of the war the American public has now turned against," McGovern said. "That's going to have to be something that they have to explore with Republicans and with the White House."

12. George McGovern: The president we SHOULD have had!
Eternal curses on the Democrats for Nixon and their bastard children, the DLC.

You people sentenced the world to two more generations of misery.

Thanks for carrying on the struggle for peace, senator.
