Human development index improves in Venezuela
(It must have absolutely KILLED this "opposition" newspaper in Venezuela to have to run this story! A bitter obligation, for sure.)

Caracas, Friday November 10 , 2006

Human development index improves in Venezuela

Venezuela has made progress in some of the variables considered by the United Nations Development Program to define the human development index.

The rank -with Norway at the first position and Niger last- considers data related to income, education and access to healthcare, among other factors. Both countries were ranked in the same position in the 2005 Human Development Report, Efe informed.

Venezuela improved from the 75th position in 2005 to the 72nd position this year among 177 countries. According to the report, some variables have not changed significantly in the country, such as life expectancy (from 72.9 years in 2005 to 73 years in 2006) and literacy rate, which remained unchanged at 93 percent.

Per capita Gross Domestic Product (GDP) -which amounted to USD 4,919 in the 2005 report, based on 2003 data- increased to USD 6,043, based on information corresponding to 2004.

However, in the human poverty index Venezuela occupies the 16th position (compared to the 14th position last year). In this list, Uruguay is ranked first and Mali last. However, when analyzing particular data, it can be noticed that Venezuela has managed to reduce the number of people living under the poverty line.

1. Thanks, Judi Lynn! It's amazing what having a good leftist government
truly elected by the majority will do for ordinary people!

2. You know how large a part in the coup run-up this paper played....
it will never back down in its war against this President.

You can see they stewed and worried over how to spin the article against him, with no clear shot they could use to devaluate Venzuela's REAL movement upward and onward which has been characteristic from the first of this Presidency.

They should get an honorable mention for describing the shift in their country's average LIFE EXPECTANCY from 72.9% to 73% as "not changed significantly!" Will they EVER get their heads outta there? That's no small achievement for ONE YEAR, spread over an ENORMOUS population of very, very poor (thanks to appallingly bad goverment from the Venzuelan elite prior to 1999).

4. Now that's WIERD! First time I've seen this.
You may have noticed they have some rabid right-wing enemies. I'd suspect someone who doesn't want them to publish, absolutely!

They may be having a hard time keeping this up and running prior to the election. We have seen an "opposition" mayor, the previous mayor of Caracas, Alfredo Peña, close a community tv station and take away their broadcasting equipment, a couple of years ago. Maybe this is similar.

The university student got caught with the pipe bombs outside the US Embassy in Venezuela. I'm still very curious to know who is this university student.

Here's a run-down of the story for people who didn't hear about it:
Venezuelan puts pipe-bombs outside US Embassy
23 Oct 2006 22:33:42 GMT
Source: Reuters

CARACAS, Venezuela, Oct 23 (Reuters) - A Venezuelan man placed home-made pipe-bombs outside the U.S. Embassy in Caracas on Monday but was quickly detained before he could detonate the explosives, police said.

Nobody was hurt in the incident, which closed down a road for hours outside the heavily fortified embassy until police blew up the bombs in a controlled explosion.

The man's motives remained unclear but local media reported he was a student whose goal was to get publicity rather than hurt anybody.

The police suspect he planned to place more explosives at the Israeli Embassy, said an investigative officer, who asked not to be named because he was not authorized to give details of the case.

8. Just think of how Venezuela, Cuba and other Latin American countries
could improve if the US assisted these leaders instead of forcing them to use valuable resources to deal with the hostility.

He's a slippery one, that Hugo.

He'll placate the citizens with better living conditions, then BLAMMO! A godless communist dictatorship.

I've seen his type before.

20. Is that sarcasm?
Edited on Sat Nov-11-06 02:04 PM by w4rma
Because that is actually a very valid tactic that one *should* be wary of.

A note: Chavez isn't a communist in ideology. His ideology appears to be a hybrid social-capitalist economic ideology. He is also pro-democracy.

9. If our neighbors south of us ever got it together they could put the US to shame
Their countries are beautiful. If only they could develop some environmentally friendly industries, create more jobs, and attract the kind of investments that are going to China and the money that is going to Iraq.

17. Traitor! Thoughtcrime!
You have committed a thoughtcrime - the crime of thinking for yourself and posting positive statistics for a leftist commie thrice-elected dictator!

Here's the right meme: Venezuela bad, Venezuela thug/bully, Venezuela failure. Now repeat after me . . .
