Senator gives global warming alarm a final cold shoulder
GOP's Inhofe, chairing his last committee hearing, says media has been alarmist
Zachary Coile, Chronicle Washington Bureau

Thursday, December 7, 2006

(12-07) 04:00 PST Washington -- Sen. James Inhofe, in his last hearing as chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, blamed Hollywood and the news media Wednesday for "hyping" the view that humans are causing global warming.

"It's unfortunate that so many are focused on alarmism rather than a responsible path forward on this issue," the Oklahoma Republican said.

California Sen. Barbara Boxer, who will take the committee gavel from Inhofe in January, shook her head and said it was sad that one of the last days of the 109th Congress was spent criticizing media coverage of climate change instead of working on legislation to curb greenhouse gases.

"In a free society in what is the greatest democracy in the world, I don't believe it's proper to put pressure on the media to please a particular Senate committee's view," Boxer said.

1. Jim Inhofe + IDIOT = redundant.
This man is a joke. He has done NOTHING for Oklahoma. We have horrible roads and bridges, he hardly ever stands up and goes after something that could help the state, and the stupid OKIES here just keep voting for the SOB.

Oklahoma has more than its fair share of embarrassments. I hoped once we got rid of Governor Frank "open mouth, insert foot" Keating, things might get better. But NO. We still must carry around the burden of James Inhofe and John Sullivan.

I pray someday the people in this state will get a clue and vote these motherf*ckers OUT.

Inhofe and his brother had a very nasty business breakup, and many believe Inhofe has dodged paying taxes on some of his income over the years.

Sullivan is an arsonist, who burned down his high school. He also lied on a real estate license document, which got his license pulled, and he has been arrested multiple times.

Just the type of conservative, family men we want, right? :eyes:

Why do the people of Oklahoma over and over, year after year, set such low standards for their representatives?

2. interesting tactic
but not the way he thinks.

One way of convincing people is to take away their excuses/objections.

Objection: "the media is blowing this all out of proportion!"
Answer: After careful review they are not "blowing it out of proportion" but rather giving it the attention in line with the issues importance.

Tornado hits London; at least six injured, homes damaged
Updated 12/7/2006 11:53 AM ET

By Robert Barr, Associated Press Writer

LONDON — A tornado ripped off part of a wall of a house in northwest London, damaged several nearby homes and injured at least six people Thursday, authorities said.
One man was taken to a hospital with a head injury, and five other adults were treated at the scene for minor injuries and shock, London Ambulance Service said.

VIDEO: Tornado hits London

"It came from nowhere: The sky turned dark, hail started falling and then within 10 minutes, it was gone," said local resident Perrin Sledge.

"A police officer told me he had a report of the tornado on his radio, turned the corner and saw the wind whip a garbage can into another car. He said it was like a scene from the movie Twister," Sledge said.

5. Inhofe gave the names of reporters he objected to.
I don't know if you caught the report on this on NPR's "Morning Edition," but Inhofe rattled off a list of names of reporters who had reported on him. Talk about sour grapes.

See link.

7. Also, in the clip, one of Injofe's "experts" claims there should be MORE greenhouse gasses
released into the atmosphere, to prevent the onset of an ice age. I just goddamned give up!

Ocean warming's effect on phytoplankton
NASA satellite data show how global climate change hurts marine food chain
Jane Kay, Chronicle Environment Writer

Thursday, December 7, 2006

When the climate warms, there is a drop in the abundance of the ocean's phytoplankton, the tiny plants that feed krill, fish and whales, according to scientists who say new research offers the first clues to the future of marine life under global warming.

Ocean temperatures have generally risen over the last 50 years as the atmosphere warms. And now nine years of NASA satellite data published today in the journal Nature show that the growth rate and abundance of phytoplankton around the world decreases in warm ocean years and increases in cooler ocean years.

The findings are crucial because they show a consequence of the changing global climate at the most fundamental level. Scientists estimate that phytoplankton is responsible for about half of Earth's photosynthesis, a process that removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and converts it into organic carbon and oxygen that feeds nearly every ocean ecosystem.

Fewer phytoplankton consume less carbon dioxide, aggravating a cycle that can lead to even more warming.

Over the past decades, California scientists have linked declining plankton numbers to El Niños and other warm-water years in the Pacific Ocean, which set off a domino effect of fewer krill and young fish and eventually failed reproduction of seabirds and even deaths of seals and sea lions.

"What's amazing is this is the first time we see it on a global scale,'' said Dave Siegel, professor of marine science at UC Santa Barbara and a study author. "We have an inkling now what will happen to the ocean's biology in future climates.''
