Lawmakers call for Bush impeachment, NM
SANTA FE (AP) -- Two New Mexico lawmakers have introduced a measure calling on Congress to impeach President Bush and Vice President Cheney.

State Sens. John Grubesic of Santa Fe and Gerald Ortiz y Pino of Albuquerque, both Democrats, said the resolution is a serious effort to try to trigger impeachment proceedings.
...
The measure alleges that Bush and Cheney conspired with others to intentionally mislead Congress and the public about the threat posed by Iraq in order to justify the war. It also cites the administration's warrantless wiretapping program and alleges the torture of prisoners and the denial of constitutional rights to enemy combatants.
...
Grubesic told the crowd that by introducing the resolution, ''we created a ripple. Your voice is going to turn it into a tidal wave, hopefully.''

5. That was really good, but no-
The state Democratic Party, at a meeting in March, adopted a call for Bush's impeachment as part of its platform. Party chairman John Wertheim said at the time it stemmed from ''perceived abuses of power and corruption in the Bush administration.''

23. New Jersey is also working on their own...
...impeachment bill under the Jefferson Manual.

I've learned that these bills from a state legislature do not *compel* the House to act, and they can table the bill if they choose (although under certain circumstances, they have to allow one hour of debate on the House floor before doing so), but if they keep getting these bills from more than one state legislature, they're going to have to hold a finger to the wind and weigh the political consequences of ignoring We the People!

I'm proud of New Mexico for stepping up to the plate!

25. This is beyond great...
But isn't it ridiculous that its taking this to get this impeachment ball rolling? I mean, c'mon folks, what exactly did they have to do to get Congress to take the iniative. Either they're still too scared of being called "partisan" by a crippled right wing, or Nancy is shrewder than I thought. Maybe she was waiting for "the people" to force the issue, so it wouldn't be seen as "Revenge of the Democrats". In fact, that's what I'm going with...;)

42. OK, rant time from a yes man
Had enough of this insanity. Torture? Suspension of habeas corpus and all other measures for reliability of evidence for conviction of crimes? Guantanamo? Lies? Illegal domestic wiretaps? Deaths of hundreds of humans every day, day after day, that don't even get a headline? Treason? War as an answer? Concerted efforts that clearly will destroy the US military, the US economy, countless US families? Whoring, blind-ass, money-grubbing shit-for-brains media? Torture, for fucks sake??? GENOCIDE? Stop them now. They talk about worst case scenarios. They are the realization of the worst case scenario over and over and over and over and over and over. I'm so fucking tired of hearing about their worst case scenarios. They can't begin to imagine worst case scenarios. I have had enough education in worst case scenario. Stop It Now. I hate yes-manning anybody, but I'm tired of thinking that standing on the bridge on Tuesday nights, or in the park on Saturday with a new clever sign that just maybe will convince one more person, will keep me morally clean, or do more than put me on record protesting this insanity (no criticism, big supporter of all of you on the bridge, just fed up again and again). Stop them now, elected "leaders." Or, as Dick says, go fuck yourselves.

We're all dirty, we're all covered up with the awful shit these people have done and keep doing. Imagine a time when the money starts running out. Imagine a time when the chickens really do come home to roost in the US. Imagine 9/11 x 200. Imagine you were a human being living in Baghdad, or Al Anbar. It's not so remote. We have met the terrorists, and they is us.

50. Thanks again, and
it's kind of self indulgent to drop the f-bomb on a public forum. I don't think we can immediately expect anyone in the MT legislature to follow suit, though. Too busy gloating over (and going money-crazy in-fucking-sane over) a budget surplus fueled by real estate speculation pricing houses in western MT out of any un-rich person's possible budget. With a guy running the senate education committee who says he thinks education of k-kids is over-rated (Schweitzer put him there - look it up) and "they should spend more time with their parents" rather than going to school (good god, let's reduce things to their most inane level, somehow akin to the cutting insight of the comment from Tony Snow that "this would make Osama bin Laden happy", no?) ... And coal gassification... And ethanol from herbicide and fertilizer fed subsidized farms that cost more petrol than just burning the fucking gas... Though I have hopes for a few. Momentum is important with pols. I just think about junior high to give myself a frame of reference. Good for these NM humans, though.

48. Boondog..
Been around awhile myself but don't post too much.

I understand your frustration and two things you said jumped out at me.

I think it was "We're all covered in this shit." and "imagine 9/11 x 200"

Mostly the latter, but both thoughts from your original post here scare the crap out of me. The first because it is true and we are waisting time fighting eachother while the second is probably already being set in motion.

May we all get our shit together!!

51. I know, I know, I know, and ain't it something that...
the short-sightedness of our soundbite society misses so much (I don't exempt myself from this world completely), and is so criminally negligent, in examining REAL worst case scenarios and through fear accepts the notion that escalating violence will somehow lead to something better? Tunnel-vision driven through fear.

Yes, a ripple. On the day of STFU speech, I put my "Impeach *" button on my purse. Even if this should not happen (and I believe it should happen, otherwise, what is the point of having it, if not for this?), we need to apply some serious pressure to this administration. We cannot allow them to get away unscathed. And we need to show Congress that we are serious about this.

62. new mexico call for impeachment
I moved from the backwoods of this country (washington DC) to
a progressive state--years ago--New Mexico

we have two things going for us right now---the first drive
for impeachment and Bill Richardson--

How many of you can state that your Governor comes to your
town on a regular basis to discuss what your people need, and
does it on a one on one basis---This guy is terrific---best
politician ever met--

PS--Hope Bush never comes back, and hope Heather Wilson moves
in with George, they deserve each other.

My university professor spouse and I have been following this development in the local paper -- in particular, via a political columnist named Heath Haussamen (http://haussamen.blogspot.com/). We SO-OOOOO hope that this will snowball and lead to the deserved impeachment of Shrub and Deadeye Dick. It would be a good start....then go after Rumsfeld, Condi, Rove, Wolfie, and the rest of the PNAC wingnuts. -- Michael & Dr. Kat
