NYT: Decision to Have Baby Isn’t Political, Mary Cheney Says
Mary Cheney, the lesbian daughter of Vice President Dick Cheney, for the first time yesterday publicly defended her decision to become pregnant and asserted that same-sex couples were equally capable of raising children as heterosexual couples.

“When Heather and I decided to have a baby, it was not going to be the most popular decision ever,” Ms. Cheney said, referring to her partner of 15 years, Heather Poe.

She then gestured to her middle — any bulge disguised by a boxy jacket — and asserted: “This is a baby. This is a blessing from God. It is not a political statement. It is not a prop to be used in a debate by people on either side of an issue. It is my child.”

(snip)

She also said she continued working for the campaign because the idea of Senator John Kerry, the Democratic candidate, becoming president was “terrifying,” acknowledging that her view would probably not be a popular sentiment among the Barnard students.

1. the right wing rules don't apply to her
as the privileged daughter of the powerful... she won't have to worry about her rights. However, the vast majority of gay couples are being targeted by the extreme right who want them to be relegated to second class citizenship. Not that she could give a shit.

"It is not a political statement" Now is she could just get the right wing out, let them know that their politics have nothing to do with a woman and pregnancy.

8. she is correct. It is a personal choice, between her and her partner. However,
she only has the right to make the personal choice because of the rights afforded her under our Constitution.

But I thought God hates homosexuals? Why would He bless two lesbians with a baby?

Just channeling the confusion and angst from the lunatic Christian fundamentalist fringe over her statement...the suckers.

14. That's not what James Dobson says
You should pray for forgiveness and repentance, Ms. Cheney. Pray that God will take this horrible, immoral, self-destructive lifestyle choice out of your life forever. Why isn't she in a Change Ministries program? Why aren't her parents more involved in her life? What a wretched job they must have done in raising such a child, so rebellious against Holy Scripture.

Oh wait, James Dobson hasn't uttered a peep about this particular homosexual person. I wonder why not?

30. Just what we need...one more Cheney. That kid has some obstacles to clear.
I hope her child can someday come to terms with the fact that her mother supported and propped up a political movement that vilified her very existance.

How fucking sick is that? Her own mother supports the people who hate the idea of the child that is about to be born?

My head just exploded.

world, would see her deprived of her child at birth because as a lesbian she's not fit to raise any child.

24. Mary Cheney is a freak. She's a freak show when she comes up on the news.
There's nothing wrong with being gay. But there is when you join a group that is against gays while you are gay.

The woman is simply a freak.

This is no different than reporting on Robertson. Another psycho-angry-pitbull-freak.

28. Dick Cheney is a liberal. He's just the greediest SOB on Earth!
Seems to me that the Cheney family will do or say anything to make money and remain in power. I frankly think he's conservative only to suit his aims. He doesn't believe that bullshit about destroying America's families if a lesbian has a baby. He'll just sell anyone out, and so will his daughter, in order to stay rich.

I honestly believe he is probably a social liberal in private, and a greedy fucking conservative in public.

31. I agree, the decision to have a baby should not be political.
Unfortunately, Ms. Cheney, thanks to people in your party, it is.

You, of course don't have to worry about little things like health insurance and child care. If your pregnancy goes wrong the exclusive private hospital you are in will, no doubt, let your partner into the room and I'm sure your parents will let Heather in on any decisions that have to be made. If, in the future, you and your partner break up, no doubt Daddy will make the problem go away--with large sums of cash, of course.

Other gay people aren't so lucky, Mary. Wealth does tend to give one freedom from every day cares.
