LIMA, Peru: Authorities gathering evidence in a human rights case against former President Alberto Fujimori on Wednesday exhumed the remains of a university professor and nine students killed in 1992 by a paramilitary death squad.
Peru is seeking to extradite Fujimori from Chile to face charges in the connection with the killings, along with other alleged rights abuses during his 1990-2000 autocratic government. Fujimori has been in Chile since 2005 after arriving there from Japan, where he had lived in exile since his regime collapsed amid a corruption scandal.
On Wednesday, the victims' relatives looked on as prosecutors and forensic specialists unearthed the remains buried in four coffins in a cemetery in central Lima, the Peruvian capital.
"Fujimori has to return to Peru to respond for the deaths of these students," Raida Condor, whose son Armando was among the victims, told The Associated Press. "He's a fugitive and he must return to this country."
Peruvian authorities allege Fujimori sanctioned the Colina paramilitary death squad that sought to eliminate collaborators of the Maoist Shining Path guerrillas.
