Justifications for potential attack on Iran on shaky ground
McClatchy Newspapers

WASHINGTON - The Bush administration is stepping up its confrontation with Iran, accusing the Islamic regime in Tehran of supplying arms to Shiite Muslim militias in Iraq for attacks on U.S. forces.

But the White House’s failure to document its case, its acute credibility deficit, and a new U.S. intelligence finding that outside meddling is “not likely” a major cause of the bloodshed are raising questions about President Bush’s intentions. Further, U.S. government data shows that Sunni Muslim insurgents commit most of the anti-U.S. violence in Iraq.

Moreover, the administration lacks proof that Iranian weapons shipments into Iran are sanctioned by the theocratic leadership or are being carried out by rogue elements, as Secretary of Defense Robert Gates confirmed on Friday.

“I don’t know that we know the answer to that question,” said Gates.

...

“It would be interesting to know why the (administration’s) statements have gotten more bellicose. It would be interesting to know why there are aircraft carriers in the region,” former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright told a Senate committee on Wednesday. “We have learned the hard way what happens when this administration decided on a policy without putting its assumptions to the test of legislative scrutiny and informed debate.”

3. A fine example in this article of the infuriating obfuscation that passes as U.S.journalism --
Edited on Fri Feb-02-07 05:52 PM by scarletwoman
Don't get me wrong, it's a relatively decent article as these things go -- but take a look at this bit:

The United States has long accused Iran of meddling in Iraq by supporting majority Shiite Muslim religious parties and militias bent on dominating the country after decades of repression under the late dictator Saddam Hussein.

(my emphasis)

It is precisely those "majority Shiite Muslim religious parties" that make up the bulk of the U.S. supported Iraq government! I am so absolutely fed up with this sort of so-called journalism that simply takes down dictation from the U.S. government and refuses to point out its obvious contradictions!

The ruling Shia coalition in Iraq includes DAWA (Al Maliki's party), SCIRI (a movement born and bred in Iran), and the Sadrists (the supporters of Muqtada al Sadr). Of these 3, only the Sadrists are a largely home-grown Iraqi movement. The other 2 parties have decades of extremely close ties to Iran, and are comprised of many Shiites who were given refuge in Iran throughout the Saddam regime.

Yes, they have been "bent on dominating the country" -- and they've succeeded! They won the much-vaunted democratic Iraqi elections! I mean, hello? You didn't notice that that's what happened?

Anyway, DAWA and SCIRI each have their own armed militias, as does Al Sadr, of course. But of the three, it is only the first two who have been the main beneficiaries of Iranian arms and training. Their militias aren't attacking U.S. troops, they are busy ethnically cleansing the Sunnis. AND they are the ruling parties of the Iraq government!

Every responsible report and news source has acknowledged for at least two years now that Sunni Iraqis make up about 80% of the insurgency. With a much smaller percentage (1% - 10%?) made up of foreign Jihadis and Wahabists -- also largely Sunni and funded by Sunni allies in Pakistan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, etc.

It is bald-faced nonsense that Iran is funding an "insurgency" against an Iraq government ruled by Iran's allies. The main purpose of the actual insurgency is to topple the U.S. supported Shiite-dominated government. That is why they target U.S. troops -- to weaken the military occupation that keeps Al Maliki propped up.

Only the woefully uninformed or outright stupid would buy the horseshit that the White House con men are trying to sell. Luckily for the White House, the mainstream press can be relied upon to do its part in maintaining as large a pool of woefully uninformed Americans as possible.

4. If he begins another attack, it must be grounds for immediate
impeachment. Call Pelosi and Reid. Call your reps.

6. It's too late then. Congress will roll over & "support our troops".
This has been stopped NOW! Impeachment needs to happen BEFORE bush starts dropping bombs on Iran.
