NYT/AP: Biden Tells Democrats at DNC Meeting He Regrets Obama Remark
Biden Tells Dems He Regrets Obama Remark
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: February 3, 2007

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Sen. Joe Biden expressed regret Saturday for describing presidential rival Barack Obama as an articulate and clean African-American, trying to stem damage to his nascent 2008 campaign.

''So, how was your week?'' Biden, D-Del., said as he took the podium at the Democratic National Committee's winter meeting. He broke into a wide smile and then a chuckle as audience members laughed. Then he turned serious.

''I want to say that I truly regret that the words I spoke offended people that I admire very much,'' Biden said. He said he was grateful for the chance to be judged by his story and to be heard in the presidential race.

Biden spent his first day as an official presidential candidate Wednesday explaining his statement that Obama is ''the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean.''

Biden is one of nine candidates in the Democratic presidential race. All appeared for the first time at the same event this weekend for the DNC gathering....

1. Biden is one of those guys you expect the verbal screw-up from. That's
Joe being Joe. I still like him a lot, wouldn't vote for him, but like him. He's entertaining and down to earth...

3. Joe is surely tongue-twisted at times
just as most humans. It does seem not quite right that he has to apologize for a remark that was meant to praise someone. I did not find it racist--just bungled. But the media put the spin on it and then it was Katy bar the door. Will candidates have to bring picture graphs of diagrammed sentences next time they make a speech?

2. Guess what Joe.
I couldn't give a shit less what you said about Obama.

What concerns me more, is that a sitting, veteran United States Senator, you made the remark that Congress has no power to stop the president in Iraq. I also hate your corporate shilling for the finance and insurance industry.

I've often refered to politicians such as yourself as Liebermorons and Bidencrats.

I am happy of course that you chose the completely incompetent, overpaid Luis Navarro, formerly Executive Director of the Florida Democratic Party, as your campaign manager. With his expertise, you should poll lower than Al Sharpton in the primaries.

6. And BIDEN misses the whole point with his "regret"
It's not a matter of one statement. It's a matter of FUCKING UP, about his PROPENSITY for fucking up serially. It really makes me wonder whether he's fit to be chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, or even hold ANY high position requiring JUDGMENT.

I was hard on EDWARDS for the SAME reason-----it's not the HOUSE, it's the STRATEGIC FUCK UP.

We need a candidate who will NOT FUCK UP.

7. Gotta give him credit...
he admits he screwed up and apologized.
None of this "That's not what I said, I said mohawk...I was just making up a word...it's all the liberal media's fault!" garbage.
Still ain't gonna vote for him, but he does get a plus point for stepping up to the plate and admitting a gaffe.

I wonder how much of George Allen's troubles could have been avoided if he'd just come right out IMMEDIATELY and said something like "You're right; that was totally out of line, uncalled for, and I behaved like a jerk. I'm sorry."

He was still a racist and thoroughly unpleasant person, but if he'd admitted he was wrong on the 'Macaca' episode, there might not been all the effort expended to bring his other actions to light.
Just my $.02....
