Kucinich looks for boost in Maine

By ANN S. KIM, Staff Writer
Saturday, February 3, 2007

U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich kicked off the New England leg of his 2008 presidential campaign in Maine on Friday with hopes that an early start here will give him a boost in New Hampshire's first-in-the-nation primary.

The Ohio Democrat met Friday with peace activists, participated in a Community Television Network show and mingled with voters at a reception and public forum in Portland. He was scheduled to campaign in New Hampshire today and Sunday.

Kucinich said his performance in the 2004 Democratic caucuses showed he had strong grassroots support in Maine. He placed third with 15 percent, behind U.S. Sen. John Kerry, who won 45 percent of the vote, and former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, who had 26 percent.

Mainers responded powerfully to his stand for peace, the environment and social justice, Kucinich said in a brief interview. He said he was in the singular position of being the only candidate who has voted against each authorization and funding appropriation for the Iraq war.

1. I'd like to see Kucinich improve his performance from 2004
If he actually won a primary, that would be exciting. I'm not a supporter, but I do like it when longshots and underdogs surprise people.

13. He won 50% in Alaska
you can check the delegate totals if you want to confirm.

I keep seeing these numbers, but they are incorrect.

He won 18% in Oregon
30% in Colorado

This was with a media blackout and everyone saying Kerry already won.
We can't let the Corporate media do that again.

15. Is this not accurate?
Alaska - Presidential Caucuses John Kerry, 48%; Dennis Kucinich, 26%; Howard Dean, 11%; John Edwards, 3%

17. Those indeed are the results of March 20th caucuses
But in Alaska those results are not binding on subsequent delegate allocation. Kucinich continued to build strength thereafter and ultimately obtained 6 of the 13 pledged delegates from Alaska.

21. He campaigned in every town in Oregon
He was very visible here and had the local media covering every event. That 18% is with a very anti-war, green left that almost gave the state to Bush - and was a one-on-one race against Kerry, everyone else had already dropped out. He only got 18% in one of his best opportunities to really make a statement about left wing politics.

6. Well, _someone_ has to carry the liberal/progressive standard
before the big coronation of the 'pragmatic', 'mainstream', tall, good-looking-with-a-nice-full-head-of-hair white guy.

8. NC Maine
Hey Buncomb Co! Maybe we can give him a better boost than last time. Democratic caucus is in Feb here. Do we send him your way with some fresh lobster, if he'll return with chopped barbeque and hushpuppies? Orange Co. exile.

7. I am almost ashamed to admit this, but....
I backed the war. I thought Dennis Kucinich was nuts. But Dennis Kucinich was right, as were all the good progressives who resisted this stupid war.

I will vote for Mr. Kucinich in the primary. And if he wins the nomination, he will certainly get my vote.

Edited on Sat Feb-03-07 09:35 PM by G_j
somebody who gets it

Supporting a gutsy, truth-telling candidate in the primaries is the best way to get people talking about what needs to be talked about, regardless of what happens later.
This war is deadly serious business. DK is one of the few who has ever offered serious alternatives.

9. @ noone in particular...
when individuals make light of Kucinichs propspects, it really turns me off from the whole democratic party apparati..

From my perspective, hes the best candidate by a mile. Hasnt compromised himself, given the green light for the surge, been ambivalent about the level of corruption in the beltway, suggested that an invasion of Iran might not be a bad thing. he doesnt have a campaign financed by the corporate machine... yes Im generalizing...

I hate to say it but I might accept Chuck Hagel before the demo front runner...

11. I should add....
I hate to say it but I might accept Chuck Hagel before the demo front runner.. that is if Dennis K isnt nominated, or the other candidates do not refine (read improve) their positions about our involvement in Iraq, Afganistan, Iran??? and start defending the Constitution.

19. We need to FIGHT FOR DENNIS!
If you are in a caucus state especially- every person present makes a difference.
Many people don't bother to attend a caucus primary.
Bring all your friends, and plenty of print outs to help illustrate that Dennis is the man of the people.

We can overcome the corporate media if we put our minds to it.
We cannot let them choose our candidate this time!

22. Dennis did pretty well in 4 states...
he also did miserably in the other 46.

To get that 18% in Oregon took him 6 weeks of campaigning.

If he were a car, I'd really have to consider him a Yugo.
