Sneaky Costa Rican FTA Uncovered
San Jose, Feb 3 (Prensa Latina) The deputy of Accion Ciudadana Party, Olivier Perez, denounced that a legislative project was amended to allow for the approval of a free trade agreement between Costa Rica and the US, union sources indicated Saturday.
The congressman of the opposition faction presented the denunciation at the General Atorney s Office, and accused the promoters of the move of having altered an article of the Legislative Assembly regulations.
Perez also called for the annulment of the mentioned article as the one published in La Gaceta 219 on November 11, 1999, Alcance 86-A, is not the one approved by the legislative plenary session on November 8 that same year.
For Perez, that action was a violation of the legislative body s stipulations, and as a result, deputies are discussing an article that was never passed by Congress.
This irregularity has caused considerable damage to Costa Ricans who trust that institutionality and democracy are respected in the parliamentary body.
