WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – President Bush told a closed-door gathering of House Democrats Saturday that the war in Iraq was “sapping our soul in some ways,” according to congressional aides who heard him.

During the private question-and-answer session, Rep. Susan Davis, D-Calif., had asked the president whether he agreed the effort in Iraq amounted to “a military at war and not a country at war,” congressional aides said.
Later, in a meeting with reporters, both Bush and House Democratic leaders sounded notes of bipartisanship. But asked whether the president had responded to Democrats’ criticism of his plan to send more troops to Iraq, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., offered a flat: “No.”
