Reuters: US House taking up Iraq troop measure next week
US House taking up Iraq troop measure next week

Source: Reuters

WASHINGTON, Feb 6 (Reuters) - The U.S. House of Representatives will take up a resolution
next week disapproving of President George W. Bush's decision to add 21,500 American troops
in Iraq, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said on Tuesday.

Although the House had intended to follow the Senate's lead on the issue, Hoyer, a Maryland
Democrat, said the House had decided not to wait any longer on the Senate to act after
Senate Republicans blocked debate on a similar resolution in that chamber on Monday.

"The reason we're going ahead is not because we don't think the Senate will ever act, but
we're not sure when the Senate is going to act," Hoyer told reporters.

"I think the resolution will clearly say we do not believe that the president's proposal of an
escalation of 21,000 troops is the proper policy to be pursuing," Hoyer said. It was being
drafted now, he said, and he expected a three day debate.

8. Can you blame them?
If even a single ray of light is cast upon the misdeeds of the Bush administration and their rubber stamp Congress that will lead to a snowball effect of inquiry. Uncover one misdeed and it'll lead to another, and another, and another..... like the layers of a rotten onion the deceit and crimes of the Republics will be slowly peeled away exposing the decomposing core of their entire ideology.

They have a lot to lose and they know if they give up an inch their ruler will be seen for exactly what he is: a law breaking, ignorant, lazy criminal.

I don't think the Dems will give up that easily. They know what's at stake and that they can deal a death blow to the Republic Party's agenda by just being persistent. All they need is one chink in the Republic armor and it's all over. They'll find it one way or another, is my guess.

4. An axe to strengthen Ried's hand.
If the Senate Rs cannot even allow a vote on a dishwatery nonbinding resolution, then what will they not fillibuster? The only other way for Congress to stop the war without waiting until next year is to begin impeachment proceedings. These proceedings begin in the House and do not require R cooperation to be tried in the Senate. We might not get a conviction, but there is no way to fillibuster the matter.

16. Pshaw! Diamondbacks are absolutely unknown in Connecticut.
:-)

You must be thinking of the northern copperhead:

Description
A medium-sized snake reaching 2 to 3 feet as an adult (61 to 90 cm). The body is usually tan or orange-tan (sometimes silvery) with dark brown to reddish brown bands. The head is usually yellowish or orangish, hence the common name. The eyes have vertically slit pupils; a loreal heat-sensing pit can be found just behind, and slightly below, the nostril. The subcaudal scales are in a single row with an undivided anal plate. Its scales are keeled.

The Northern Copperhead is venomous.

During the Civil War, "Copperheads" were near-treasonous Democrats who supported the Confederacy. Sound familiar, Joe?

9. Probably figured the House could rubber stamp whatever the Senate did.
Be quicker that way assuming the Senate did anything.

12. Democrats Doing NOTHING!
I am really disgusted with the Democratic party. We see our great young people being slaughtered in Iraq, the President is chugging right along with his plans, and the Democrats are sitting on their hands doing NOTHING!

And you all who post on the DemocraticUnderground forum are just as milk toast as the rest of the Democrats.

We have a national emergency and no one seems to be doing anything to end it. We LOST in Korea, we LOST in Vietnam, and now we are LOSING in Iraq and Afghanistan. 20% of the earth's population is Muslim, so there is a never-ending supply of insurgents to take the place of those we kill. And these people have nothing better to do than die for their "cause." No education, no jobs, no money.

I agree with Bush: He is leaving the wars to the next president to deal with. Two more years of wars and many more deaths of American young who truly believe the BS they have shoved down their throats. Many are reenlisting. Some say they need to get back to the "guys" they left behind in Iraq/Afghanistan (many have wives and young kids. I guess they don't mind if after they are blown up someone else raises their kids).

There is no reason our troops can't start coming home now. They will have all the monetary support they need TO PULL OUT. What does it take? Getting them back into Kuwait just the same way they got into Iraq. The equipment can be left for the Iraqis to use.

I voted in November like most of you. MoveOn keeps asking for $$ for this or that ad, none of which I ever see, so I won't contribute.

The latest anti-war march was a waste of time. Can't contact any of my state's Congressional reps or if I can get to their secretaries, the reps never get my messages. I am thinking of picketing Sen Ron Wyden's local office. Will probably get jailed, too.

17. Easiest way to neutralize Bush/Cheney
EXPLOSIVE NEWS:

Revealed in the GJ tapes today is that Scooter Libby said the VP AND President told him to get the whole Wilson story out.

At this point, Libby is small a potato.

Test your knowledge of the CIA leak and cover up trial with a NY Times style crossword puzzle.

18. I'm not sure I understand this, Help!
Is there someone who could summarize this whole situation?

I thought there was a non-binding resolution going on in the Senate.

Didn't the House have anything similar?

19. The Dem House has an opportunity to make a REAL statement - I 4 one hope they do...
The stronger it is - and hopefully it's not of the 'non-binding' variety - will make it EXTREMELY difficult for those Repugs who face difficult campaigns in '08. I'm not minimizing the sacrifice of our young men and women in Iraq at the present time in favor of future political considerations - but with a tidal wave of Dem's in '08 and most importantly the White House, Dem's may be able to save potentially tens of thousands of lives in Iran, Syria, NKorea and wherever else the Neocon idiots deem it necessary for American intervention.

20. Senate democrats are not really the majority
Lieberman votes with the repubs and Johnson is out sick and can't vote at all. Dems 51-49 becomes Repubs 50-49. Add to that the fact that the repubs all vote in goosestep... er, I mean, lockstep... as they are generally nothing more than the puppets of their republican party masters. Warner CO-SPONSORED the bill, Hagel spoke out in favor of it as well. How did they vote? AGAINST, AGAINST.

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I rest my case.
