London - The United States have agreed to release a classified cockpit video of a ''friendly fire death'' of a British soldier in Iraq in 2003, the government in London said Tuesday.
The move was seen as an attempt to defuse growing transatlantic tension over the footage after a British tabloid newspaper Tuesday published the video it obtained from an anonymous source.
Defence Secretary Des Browne immediately welcomed the US decision to release the tape, classified as "secret," for use as evidence in an inquest in the soldier's death.
"The release of classified information, even for the closest of allies, is never straightforward, but this is the right thing to do," Browne said in London.
The case had touched a raw nerve in Britain where a coroner in Oxford, investigating the death of 25-year-old Lance Corporal Matty Hull, had called for the video to be released and shown in court.
