1950s singer Frankie Laine dies at 93
Edited on Tue Feb-06-07 08:02 PM by Fighting Irish
Frankie Laine, the big-voiced singer whose string of hits made him one of the most popular entertainers of the 1950s, died Tuesday. He was 93.

Laine died of heart failure at Mercy Hospital in San Diego, Jimmy Marino, Laine's producer of more than a dozen years, told The Associated Press.

"He was one of the greatest singers around," Marino said. "He was one of the last Italian crooners type."

With songs such as "That's My Desire," "Mule Train," "Jezebel," "I Believe" and "That Lucky Old Sun," Laine was a regular feature of the Top Ten in the years just before rock 'n' roll ushered in a new era of popular music.

2. I've got a small-size LP with some of his hits. One of my faves
for years is his version of "One For My Baby, One More for the Road." Seemed like a a really nice guy.

3. Apparently Rawhide has a history in northern Europe...
During a banquest at a scientific conference in St. Petersburg the itnerary broke into national theme songs. The Icelanders started singing it for the USA and then all the Scandinavians joined in. "Head Em, Move Em Out! Rawhide," vid a "Sveedish" accent was a funny moment thousands of miles from home.

4. Sang the theme for the movie "High Noon"

Although Tex Ritter sang it in the flick.

Sang the theme for "Rawhide" too.

13. What a great theme and performance
Legend goes that Mel Brooks didn't tell Frankie that it was a comedy and had him perform it straight.

In any case, RIP Mr. Laine

19. "Howdya handle a hungry maaaaaaaaan? The Man-Handlers!"
Didn't he do that one, too? One of these jobs he got (and I don't remember which one) because the director or producer or casting person said - "let's try to get a Frankie Laine type." Then they stopped a moment and realized - "hey, why not get the real thing?"

23. They didn't tell him Blazing Saddles was a spoof
The producers wanted him to sound as sincere as possible.

He was shocked the first time he saw the movie.

20. Back in the day when I played some bluegrass and C&W
with a group of buddies, that was our most requested song.
We got the lyrics down cold and one guy even cracked a bullwhip at appropriate places.
I love that song.

16. did anyone else see him perform on one of those PBS oldies shows . . .
a year or two ago? . . . he was in his 90s, and had to be helped to the stage, but he stood right up there in his bright red jacket and jaunty cap and crooned "That's My Desire" to an really appreciative audience . . . a wonderful man and a versatile performer who will be missed, but who's work will live on . . .
