CNN/AP: Boston scare suspect videotaped bomb squad
Boston scare suspect videotaped bomb squad
February 6, 2007

Sean Stevens, left and Peter Berdovsky talk to reporters after pleading not guilty last week to charges of planting a hoax device.

BOSTON, Massachusetts (AP) -- One of the men criminally charged after placing blinking cartoon advertisements around the city and causing a terrorism scare videotaped a police bomb squad removing one of the devices, but did not tell the officers the object was harmless.

Surveillance cameras caught 27-year-old Peter Berdovsky videotaping officers removing what they thought was a possible bomb last week.

"Mr. Berdovsky didn't do anything inappropriate," his lawyer, Walter Prince, said Tuesday.

Prince said Berdovsky had received a call that morning from a friend who told him there was a bomb threat at a transit station. He said Berdovsky was unaware it involved one of the electronic devices that he and Sean Stevens, 28, had hung as part of a guerrilla advertising campaign for Turner Broadcasting, a division of Time Warner Inc.

"That's what he does. He videotapes things. He's a videotape freelance artist," Prince said. "When he got there, he realized what was going on, and he went back to his apartment and called his employer, and they told him they would take care of it. That's not an inappropriate response."...

1. Well, that's one way of looking at it. He was obviously scared and didn't want to get
arrested on the spot. So truthfully, he took an action to protect himself and his employer but didn't take an action to inform the police of what he knew to be true.

8. What do you think would have happened?
Look at what's going on. The bomb squad is trying to defuse what they think might be a bomb. Here comes some ratty looking dude trying to tell them it's not a bomb. What do you think the cops are going to do? "Oh, it's not a bomb? No problem, thank you very much for informing us, kind sir!"?

More than likely, he wouldn't have gotten within 10 feet before he would have been face down on the pavement, being hustled into the back of a squad car.

14. I agree. I think this guy, whatever his hair length, is a jerk.
He seemed full of tude, and himself, at the presser he and the other guy gave.

2. Very smart on his part
I certainly would not go near any police too stupid to recognize lite-brites right in front of their face.

People like that aren't showing themselves to be rational, and irrational people tend to shoot first and tell you to freeze second.

3. especially for that guy
with his long dreads he would be tasting police boot the instant he approached them.

"That hippy put the bomb here; get him!"

He JUST HAPPENED to end up videotaping the police removing what he thought was ANOTHER device right near where HE had planted one? And he did it for "art's sake?" He did it because he wanted a souvenir! And as if his lawyer would say anything else...

7. Even "regular cops" are barely approachable if you're a long haired male...
To approach bomb squad folks on the "scene" would be absolutely nuts.
Anyone that says any different is a goddamn liar or doesn't know what they're talking about.

9. regular pigs!
long hair only fuels their hate, it is not requisite to it however.

approaching those cops would be just begging to get beat down.

Anyone who disagrees has never been in a situation with a confused, belligerent pig!

It is your word against theirs, and they work at the same company as the judge.

I wonder who they will believe?

10. A phone call maybe?
There are many different ways this could have been handled. Maybe the cops over reacted but this idiot could have made a couple of phone calls, had his employer call, had his short haired accomplice take some action. Just a couple of ideas there.

Shit for Brains chose none of them.

At least according to his lawyer:

"That's what he does. He videotapes things. He's a videotape freelance artist," Prince said. "When he got there, he realized what was going on, and he went back to his apartment and called his employer, and they told him they would take care of it. That's not an inappropriate response."...

13. How freaking STUPID do you have to be to think a Lite-Brite is a bomb?
Edited on Wed Feb-07-07 12:46 PM by Alexander
The hysterical postings of some DUers here really crack me up. Not a single one of them tries to explain why in 9 other cities, nothing happened. Instead it's "Oh, but....it could've been a bomb!"

I guess anything electronic could be a bomb these days. Good gravy, I'd better not leave any of the thousand electronic appliances I have unattended, otherwise stupid bomb squad teams might think it's explosive.

The Turner folks acted in a rather stupid way, though, and apparently don't care about either of their employees. If I were Stevens or Berdovsky I'd look for employment elsewhere.
