Edmonton shul vandalized with Nazi symbols

Edmonton’s Beth Israel Synagogue was vandalized with Nazi symbols only hours before a gala celebration was held to mark the congregation’s 100th anniversary.

At around 3:30 p.m. on Jan. 28, a swastika was found on the shul’s front doors in black ink along with the warning, “This means not welcome… Get out.” Similar epithets were left on exterior walls.

Police are investigating security tapes hoping to identify the perpetrators, according to congregation president Michael Zabludowski.

Photographs were taken of the graffiti, which was wiped clean before 430 guests arrived to mark the anniversary of the city’s oldest synagogue. Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach and Mayor Stephen Mandel, Edmonton’s first Jewish mayor, were among the dignitaries present.
