Al Qaeda plans “major operations” in the Gulf
(AFP)

DUBAI - The Saudi branch of Al Qaeda announced on Thursday that it is planning major operations aimed at driving Western interests out of the Arabian Gulf, according to an online statement.

“We have for some time been in the process of preparing major operations that will weaken the crusaders’ bases in the Arabian Gulf,” said the Al Qaeda Organisation in the Gulf.

“We will cleanse the Arabian Gulf of the presence of crusaders and of their bases, which are scattered around the cradle of Islam. We promise our leader, Osama bin Laden, to continue on the same road. Your soldiers are preparing something in which you will rejoice.”

The statement was carried in the movement’s online magazine, Sawt al-Jihad (the Voice of Jihad).

8. Gulf of Tonkin essentially speedboat 'attacks' on
USS Maddox and USS Turner Joy. Fantasy attacks but hey, Bush gets to do anything, as the IWR AUMF says "...as he determines..."

Way to go Congress. Write up a Constitutional AUMF next time...if there ever is a next time. These guys have an endless war now they can always fall back on with M/I complex adding a third wheel Congress.

13. Bush doesn't know the difference between Sunnis and Shiites
He can't be expected to know the difference between the Saudi branch of al-Qaeda and Iran.

11. I fear for my friends in Bahrain...
Bahrain is a neighbor of Saudi Arabia and home of the US 5th Fleet, which carries out Gulf Operations... There is a movement there to put aside sectarian strife ("No Shi'i, no Sunni, just Bahraini!"), but good intentions by even a majority can be pushed aside by a dedicated minority sometimes... :(

Interesting that the Gulf was called the "Arabian Gulf", and not the Iran friendly "Persian Gulf"...

20. Bahrain isn't particularly dangerous...
Less so than some American cities I've lived in... Other than an overzealous merchant or two...The people were very friendly to me.

Or were you talking about the Middle East in general?

18. Bet they'll target the weak and defenseless crusaders.
soft targets like worker compounds, restaurants or hotels in seaside resorts that cater to infidels is my guess.
in other words, the ruling elite in The house of Saudwon't make the hit list

22. The Saudi branch of Al Qaeda? I never heard that one before.
I would search for this so-called online magazine (based in D.C.) but the snoops would be tracing IP addresses and black SUVs would be parked outside my house in the morning.

The statement was carried in the movement’s online magazine, Sawt al-Jihad (the Voice of Jihad).
