I may not like Rahm Emmanuel for other things he does, but he played a pretty nice poker hand when making the suggestion that Carol Lam be allowed to continue as an "outside counsel" to continue her work on the investigation she's doing on Cunningham and related cases (Brent Wilkes, Dusty Foggo, etc., etc.). Pretty creative of him! The administration is "allowed" to fix their so-called problem of putting someone in charge of the Attorney's office that would do more immigration prosecutions, which they claim is THE reason that they asked her to resign, so it would be hard for Gonzales and crew to rationalize keeping her off of a case that she's been involved with for continuity's sake unless they want to make some specific claims that having her on these cases would somehow be harmful. Nicely played Rahm! I hope it pays off!

A Democratic congressman wants U.S. Attorney Carol Lam to continue overseeing the corruption investigation that sent former Rep. Randy “Duke” Cunningham to prison and is likely to result in indictments for a Poway businessman and a former CIA official.
“The timing of her dismissal raises serious and troubling questions,” Rep. Rahm Emanuel of Illinois wrote in a letter to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales yesterday. The letter asks for Lam to be appointed as “outside counsel” after she leaves her post Feb. 15.
Lam, through a spokeswoman, declined to comment on the letter.
Lam's departure has become a rallying cry for Democrats and other critics who say the Bush administration is politicizing the ranks of federal prosecutors.
Tuesday, a Justice Department official said Lam was among six top prosecutors asked to step down for “performance-related” issues.
Lam has refused to say why she is leaving the post she described as “an absolutely fabulous job” just a year ago.
