Compromise Reached on New York's WTC Tower
Tue December 16, 2003 09:07 AM ET

By Grant McCool
NEW YORK (Reuters) - The signature skyscraper of the rebuilt World Trade Center will include a spire and electricity-generating wind turbines under a compromise reached by two architects who have feuded for months over what would be the world's tallest structure, officials said.

Development officials said on Monday night that the design of the "Freedom Tower" symbolizing the date of U.S. independence at 1,776 feet tall, would be unveiled on Friday, signaling another milestone in the dispute-ridden project.

Renowned architects Daniel Libeskind and David Childs collaborated on the design of the tower, part of one of the most ambitious projects in U.S. architectural history to rebuild the site destroyed in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

"As Libeskind proposed, it will soar 1,776 feet in the sky, culminating in a spire that evokes another great symbol of our nation's commitment to freedom -- the Statue of Liberty," the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation said

1. Reporter should've done his homework
At 1,776 feet it won't be the world's tallest structure. CN Tower in Toronto is tallest free-standing structure at 1,821 feet.

"Pataki wants a cornerstone laid on the tower by early September next year and has applied pressure on all parties to settle disagreements."

To be announced at the "big show" in late August.

4. People WILL be disgusted by it
and when 9/11 is used for political gains of EITHER party, the families of the victims and victims themselves will just go apeshit.

I think the GOP is hoping they can ride the coat-tails of 9/11 for the rest of history. It's not gonna happen...not in the way they want it to anyhow

Most Americans love a spectacle...The GOP may pull off the Mother of them all. The media will be completely complicit.
