Report: U.S. airstrike kills 5 Kurds

By LAUREN FRAYER, Associated Press Writer 37 minutes ago

BAGHDAD, Iraq - U.S. helicopters on Friday mistakenly killed at least five Kurdish troops, a group that Washington hopes to enlist as a partner to help secure Iraq, U.S. and Iraqi officials said.

The Kurdish deaths occurred about midnight in eastern Mosul, 225 miles northwest of Baghdad. The U.S. military said the airstrike was targeting al-Qaida fighters, but later issued an apology, saying the five men killed had been identified as Kurdish police.

Kurdish officials put the casualty toll at eight killed and six wounded, and said the men were guarding a branch of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan — led by Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, a key supporter of U.S. efforts in Iraq.

The U.S. military said the attack was launched after ground forces identified armed men in a bunker near a building they thought was being used to make bombs. The troops called for the men to put down their weapons in Arabic and Kurdish and fired warning shots before helicopters fired at the bunker, the military said.

1. Hate To Disillusion You: US HAS NO FRIENDS
We used to have clients, but George took care of that. Ditto allies. Now we have no one, just some stateless wheeler-dealers who would be arrested if they crossed borders, whispering sweet nothings into BushCo ears. And Tony Blair, poor demented, delusional fool that he is.

2. Heh
Kurds are the people who pushed the US into invading Iraq. If by saying Kurds are our friends, you mean friends of the US warmongers, then you are correct.

And just like any friend of warmongers, they are not safe from the warmongers.

Bagdad-------as part of the Iraqi security force-----well, some of them anyway (as some are refusing to go).

7. The Kurds are about the only ones left the military trusts
So of course they are going to be the ones sacrificed in this Surge.

They are the ones who invited us to invade and they are the ones who have been living in relative peace and comfort the past four years while the rest of Iraq burned.

They are now being asked to step up.

Which then widens the another problem for the US, Turkey and a seperate Kurdistan.

3. Maybe if U.S. intelligence resources were focused on their 'war'............
instead of their American citizens, all these 'friendly fire mistakes' would NOT happen.

10. So, the Kurds appear to be the only people 'mistakenly' killed.
Everyone else is a baaaaaaad terra dude. They killed men, women, and children all over the damm country and only these Kurds are allowed into the "mistakenly killed" category.

What BS.
