McCain denies links to 'soft money'

MUNICH, Germany (CNN) -- Sen. John McCain blasted a report in the Washington Post that said the Arizona Republican, who has campaigned against the use of "soft money," is using just those kinds of funds to support his GOP presidential nomination.

McCain told CNN the article is "worst hit job that has ever been done in my entire political career."

According to the story published on Sunday, campaign and IRS records show several of McCain's finance co-chairmen "have given or raised large donations for political parties or 527 groups."

Named after tax code, a 527 is a tax-exempt organization created to influence political campaigns. "Soft money" refers to a type of unlimited contribution to these organizations from corporate and wealthy donors.

McCain's Soft Money Stance Changes As He Launches Presidential Campaign

Washington, DC (AHN) - Sen. John McCain has done an about-face when it comes to campaign funds. McCain is enlisting the help of lobbyists and fundraisers in his bid for the presidency, some of the same people he's complained about before.

McCain has long crusaded against big donors, fundraisers and lobbyists and their influence on Washington politics.

He was a leader in trying to eliminate "soft money" in elections - large donations that come from corporations, wealthy individuals and labor unions. He and Sen. Russ Feingold pushed through legislation in 2002 that ended soft money donations and placed limits on donations.

McCain's campaign now says the senator is still studying the issue and will use soft money to beat Democrats, if the group donating the money is legal.

3. McCain recently made a big deal on one the Sun AM news shows
about how his "new hires" would act ""honorably"" when 1 or more of them engaged in dirty tricks that sank McCain last time around.

Now one of them (per an article basically criticizing Edwards' aides) is a big time vitriolic blogger (on McCain's staff) against other repugs.

Somehow, I find McCain slipping in the honorable campaign category.

Yet, MSM, including the NYTimes chooses to focus on the loose canons in Edwards' camp.
