US says no more bargaining with NKorea on nukes

12/02/2007 04h36

BEIJING (AFP) - The United States will not bargain any more with North Korea over its nuclear weapons drive, the top US envoy said Monday as six-nation talks hung in the balance on a final day of negotiations.

Christopher Hill and his counterparts from Japan and South Korea said the success or failure of the talks in Beijing depended on the final response from North Korean negotiator Kim Kye-Gwan.

"I think we have put everything on the table. We offered a way forward on a number of issues," Hill told reporters here.

"They (North Koreans) just have to make a decision. I don't think we are going to do any more bargaining."

Hill said Monday would be the final day of talks, which had begun Thursday on an optimistic note with host China presenting a proposal for North Korea to take initial steps toward disarmament in return for economic incentives.

isn't it about time the pentagon took an armed detachment into the White House and arrested Bu$h, Cheney, and Condi and the other NeoCons pearl and the media talking heads that are complicit.. with fixed Bayonets and Frog March them out in shackles..?

3. Ya know, with the state of the MSM these days, I wonder if anyone would even notice...
...if we had a Military coup d'état in Washington. Fox "news" would probably still try to spin it as something positive.

S. Korea Official Says Talks on N. Korea's Nuclear
Program Expected to Be Extended Another Day

By JAE-SOON CHANG

BEIJING Feb 12, 2007 (AP)— Talks on North Korea's nuclear program were likely
to be extended a day in a possible sign of narrowing differences, a South Korean
official said Monday, as envoys lay responsibility for resolving the long-running
standoff solely on Pyongyang.

Over the previous four days, the six-country talks in Beijing have stalled over
disagreements on energy assistance for the North in exchange for its abandonment
of nuclear weapons.

"It is up to the North Koreans. We have put everything on the table. We have
offered a way forward on a number of issues. They just need to make a decision,"
U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Christopher Hill told reporters before Monday's
session, which he said would be the last day of talks.

But later after a series of meetings between delegations, a South Korean official
said negotiations were expected to be extended another day.

4. It's so typical for the AP to try to spin this failure as positive...
Headline says "SKorea: NKorea Nuke Talks to Be Extended"

Yet in the article it says "...were likely to be extended a day...":grr:

Same Press Conference, I think.

5. Had to do something 'cause a deal was a real possibility.
So best to throw down ultimatums and get all blustery. I've heard North Koreans are really responsive to that kind of bullshit.

BEIJING, Feb 12 (Reuters) - The United States and North Korea haggled on Monday over
energy aid the North would receive in exchange for ending its nuclear arms ambitions
but it looked like some sort of an agreement in six-part talks was emerging.

An initial session of talks faltered over North Korea's demand for a huge infusion of
energy aid, but envoys stayed up into the early hours of Tuesday, raising prospects
for a last-minute deal.

"There is a possibility that the delegates might strike an agreement tonight," a South
Korean official said.

China's Xinhua news agency, quoting a South Korean official, said a joint document was
likely to be adopted on Tuesday.

Deal struck at NKorean nuclear talks: SKorean official

BEIJING (AFP) - Chief envoys to six-nation talks aimed at ending North Korea's nuclear
weapons programme clinched a deal at the end of marathon negotiations, a South
Korean official said.

"The chief delegates struck a deal over a joint document," a South Korean government
official involved in the discussions told AFP, although he added it still required the
final green light from their respective governments.

"It would require the approval from the home governments of the negotiators."

9. Thanks for staying on top of this Eugene...
I hope the news stays good on this one, but with these Bush people, they could sink these talks at any time, so keep us posted.
