Nebraska's Dems set early caucuses
BY SUSAN SZALEWSKI
WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

Nebraska Democrats are switching from a May primary election to Feb. 9 caucuses next year to decide their preference for the party's presidential nominee.

State party leaders hope to give Nebraska Democrats a stronger voice in choosing the nominee. Typically, the Democratic race has been decided by the time Nebraska's Democrats get their say.

But will the voice be heard? Democrats are the minority party in a sparsely populated state, and the caucuses would come just days after several larger states hold the Super Tuesday primary elections on Feb. 5.

Democratic National Committeeman Vince Powers of Lincoln was willing to take a chance. He and other Democratic leaders at the party's State Central Committee meeting Saturday in Lincoln decided on the Feb. 9 caucuses.
