FBI loses laptops with classified information

POSTED: 1:48 p.m. EST, February 12, 2007
Story Highlights
• Inspector general says at least 10 missing laptops had sensitive information
• 160 laptops lost or stolen during four-year period
• 51 missing laptops may also contain sensitive information
• Equal number of weapons also missing

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The FBI lost at least 10 laptop computers containing classified information during a four-year period ending in 2005, the Justice Department's inspector general has found.

The 10 were among the 160 laptops lost or stolen during a 44-month period ending September 30, 2005, Inspector General Glenn Fine reported. Along with the laptops, an equal numbers of weapons were also missing.

The report said the number of missing items, while still a problem, represents a sharp improvement since a 2002 audit, which found more than 300 laptops and 300 weapons lost or stolen during the previous 28-month period.

Fine said that among the 10 missing laptops known to contain sensitive or classified information was one that had identifying information on FBI personnel.

Several more lost or stolen laptops may also contain sensitive counterintelligence or counterterrorism information, the report said.........

3. My tinfoil hat ...
Sometimes I wonder how many of these "lost PCs" or "hacked consumer databases" are covers for the Government snooping into our lives ... the RW businesses admit to being "hacked" instead of just plain turning their data over to Bush and his unconstitutional thugs ...

5. It's just an excuse when your personal info comes up in the wrong hands
and can be used against you they will say it got out there by mistake. But, they are putting personal info out there on purpose to make it available to choicepoint or some other organazation.

TOTAL number of records containing sensitive personal information involved in security breaches
(since 4-20-05)
Folks, that is fully 1/3 of the US population. 1 out of every 3 people.

13. Report: FBI Loses 3 To 4 Laptops Every Month
Some of the recently lost or stolen computers contained 'sensitive' information, but the extent of the damage from the losses is unknown.

Three to four laptops are lost or stolen from the FBI every month, according to a report issued this month from the Justice Department's Inspector General.

While 116 FBI laptops were reported lost and 44 were reported stolen in the last 44 months, the agency is doing better than it was five years ago, the DOJ's audit said of one of the nation's top investigative agencies. Another audit, conducted in 2002, showed that in a 28-month period 300 FBI laptops had been lost and 17 had been stolen.

At least seven of the computers were issued to FBI divisions that handle some of the most sensitive information related to national security. Six were assigned to the Counter-Intelligence Division and one was assigned to the Counterterrorism Division. Yet, the FBI did not know what these computers contained, including whether or not they held sensitive or classified information.

"This is a significant deficiency," the report states. "Some of these laptops may have contained classified or sensitive information, such as personally identifiable information or investigative case files. Without knowing the contents of these lost and stolen laptop computers, it is impossible for the FBI to know the extent of the damage these losses might have had on its operations or on national security."

14. How convenient.
They don't even bother putting it on disk anymore. They just leave it on the laptop where it can be stolen.

17. And the person who loses a laptop with sensitive
information on it is still working in that capacity? He/she should be out the door and looking for work.

18. They've confused "StripClub" with "Starbucks"
yes, you can usually get Coffee at a stripclub but she tends to charge about $50 for 2 songs. That and she takes over your laptop.

After their little New Orleans prostitution investigation I wouldn't trust the FBI to find sand at a beach.
