WP: 'I'm Doing Fine,' Bush Tells Worried Father
'I'm Doing Fine,' President Tells Worried Father
By Peter Baker
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, February 13, 2007; Page A04

As the House gets ready to begin debating the Iraq war today, President Bush has a piece of advice for his father: Turn off the television.

It seems that former president George H.W. Bush has been getting agitated watching all the attacks on his son -- so much so that the current president said yesterday that he is worried for his father's well-being.

"I am actually more concerned about him than I have ever been in my life, because he's paying too much attention to the news," the president told C-SPAN in an interview to be broadcast this morning. "And I understand how difficult it is for a person who loves somebody to see them out in the political process and to kind of endure the criticism. My answer to him is: 'Look, don't pay attention to it. I'm doing fine.' "

That is advice he apparently intends to follow himself. Bush has no plans to watch the House debate his decision to send 21,500 more troops to Iraq.

"You know, I've got a full day," he said. "I mean, it's not as if the world stops when the Congress does their duty."

Besides, he added: "I already know what the debate is. I hear a lot of opinions."...

2. I think Poppy and Barr always loved Jeb best. I think Dubya knows it and
thought he'd show the old man how to run a war.

Now that it's clear he's getting his ass handed to him, he doesn't want any more of a substantive discussion with his father than he ever had, and that is to say, he never had any in the first place, because it's kind of hard to hold a conversation while you're out wildcattin' in West Texas snorting blow up your arrogant nose.

It's a damned poor commentary on American public life when a sub-mediocre president has to ask into the well-being of a disastrous one.

It's pure mercy that Freud died without having to witness this.

11. Hi to you, DeepModemMom. Thanks, and I hope things are
good where you are. Things are looking up. Stu Rothenberg believes we have a shot at half a dozen or more gains in the U.S. Senate in 08, and I'm feeling really good about our odds for the White House, too.

All good wishes.

13. Hi, villager. Nice to run into you tonight on DU.
Jung?

He might have just blown his brains out. Poppy and Dubya would have fried his circuits. The whole mythic construct would have gone up in smoke.

There's that addage that it is a dangerous man who does not know what he does not know.

Dubya seems to be the prototype for that kind of man. It's increasingly clear that he has minimal duties as chief executive, and that Uncle Dick is likely at the control panel.

Frightening stuff.

22. No frickin' kidding!
Excuse me, but I am getting damned tired of hearing how the old man's feelings are so hurt all the time by the reaction to his son, beelzebub, okay? Hey, 41 - you sit there and whine and whimper all you want. I'd much rather concern myself with the feelings of the grieving mothers and widows of slain soldiers KILLED BY YOUR MISCREANT BABOON of a son (with apologies to baboons everywhere). No wonder the "wimp factor" was such a big deal during ghwb's presidency - if practically all we ever hear from this old twerp is how hurt his feelings are. Like we're all supposed to be just fine and dandy and okay with what shithead the younger has done to our country and its citizens - and the rest of the world??? Take your hurt little feelings and sit on 'em and swivel.

9. Methinks George Sr ...
... is much more aware of the peril his son is in than George Jr (being an idiot) can grasp.

Turning the TV off doesn't turn off the questions being raised, the investigations being revved up, the growing anger of the citizenry over what is happening in Iraq, and what they are learning about how we got there.

As for the comment, "I mean, it's not as if the world stops when the Congress does their duty." Well, being as Congress hasn't done their duty in years, he's not in a position to know whether the world stops when that happens or not.

Edited on Tue Feb-13-07 01:15 AM by lakercub
while soldiers and Iraqi civilians are dying, the poor are getting poorer, the Earth is warming to an alarming degree, and health care is falling apart. I'm sure glad George is doing fine.

Mr. President....shut the hell up...you stink sir. And so did your father. I have no sympathy for him or for you. He is responsible for much of what is wrong in this country and you've made it 100 times worse. You are both reprehensible, lying, stealing, and manipulating sons of bitches.

Isn't it amazing? The country is 230 years old and has had 43 presidents, but out of all those presidents...4 out of the last 7 have been among the all-time worst (Nixon, Reagan, Bush, Chimpy)? I hope it's just a dry spell.

16. Not many people can say, to a former president: "Happy Valentines Day, Dad;
...who cares what you think?"

A rare and very special event in U.S. history.

It's either great leadership, or Roman style patricide.

Either way, it's very sweet.

For the survivor.

and not the 21.5 k troops that are going to iraq, and the 100's of thousands of people who have lost their lives or been maimed.

I have a hard time believing bush senior CAN feel for his murderous son. If he had the quaility to feel, I doubt he could handle what his son does to others.

29. Flame me if you like, but it's too bad the old man has to see this
Turning off the TV is probably the best thing he can do. No, as someone says in a prior post, it won't stop any of the question or change any of the answers. It will just make the old man a little less agitated.

The questions aren't going to get any easier; the answers aren't going to start getting pleasant all of a sudden.

George Bush was not a complete failure as a human being. He wasn't one of our truly great presidents and he most certainly had more to do with Iran-Contra than is in the official record. Nevertheless, to say he had the most impressive resume in the world is not an exaggeration.

The elder Mr. Bush must have been proud to see his oldest son follow him to the White House. How painful it must be to watch his son blunder at full speed into Iraq and then seek to fix that mess by getting into a bigger one in Iran, to go on partying while an American city drowned, to say nothing of squandering the budget surplus or the corruption and cronyism rampant in the Bush Jr. administration. That has got to hard to watch.

A few minutes ago, I took 37.5 mg of paxil to relieve major depression and 25 mg of trazodone to help me sleep. It's no fun being nuts, but with those personal problems, I'm glad I'm not old Mr. Bush these days.

53. Poppy's master plan was to set up GW in Texas, Jeb in FLA,
and Neilsie in Colorado to keep the Bush legacy (of pillaging and profiteering) going. He probably thought Jeb would make it to the White House first, but he ended up with George instead. The old man is reaping the seed he sowed. I have no pity for him.

44. This is Junior reminding us all...
...that we are disposable insects who can be "turned off" when it suits
him not to listen.

Junior's handlers shelter him from the Americans that he represents. Those
around him don't dare counter his ridiculous actions. That only leaves
the "outside world", and Junior is letting us know that he just doesn't
care or pay attention.

The "television" that Junior is advising his father to "turn off" is
the voices of the American people. It's his sinking poll numbers
and the constant reminder that America rejected this war and this
pResident in the 06 elections.

Junior wants us all to know that he tunes out "We the People" and
doesn't "pay attention" to what "We the People" want.
