After spurning requests by the Congressional Black Caucus for months, President George W. Bush will meet Thursday with members for the first time in more than two years.
Led by caucus chairwoman Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, D-Mich., they plan to discuss changes they would like to see in the president's budget, expediting aid for Hurricane Katrina victims and their opposition to Bush's handling of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The meeting reflects the newfound clout of the 43-member caucus, all Democrats. As a result of the November elections putting Democrats in control of the House, caucus members now head five full committees and almost 15 subcommittees, including four of the six subcommittees on transportation.
One is Rep. William Lacy Clay Jr., D-St. Louis, who now heads the subcommittee on federalism and the census.
"Our priorities are very different," Clay said. "He sees things one way and the caucus sees them another, and there's not much you can say to get a philosophical shift from this president."
