Ecuador Congress for Assembly Vote

Quito, Feb 14 (Prensa Latina) The approval in the national congress of a vote on the creation of a Constituent Assembly with full powers generates Wednesday dissimilar reactions in the Ecuadorian political stage.

President Rafael Correa said Parliament has finally come over to the people s side, having passed the referendum with 57 votes.

In a visit to Nueva Loja, capital of the Amazonian province of Sucumbios, Correa said that this was not a governmental victory, but of the people.

He warned the struggle "has just begun" and termed traditional political parties as mafias which have governed the nation without concern for electrification, the construction of roads, bridges and schools.

This was "a convincing victory against political mafias like Christian Social Party, Renewal Party of National Action and Patriotic Society Party," he stated.

"The Assembly must reform the outdated and institutionalized decadence from the very bottom,"

noted the head of State.
