(Wyoming) Gov may give new life to wolf management bill
Gov may give new life to wolf management bill

By WHITNEY ROYSTER
Star-Tribune environmental reporter Thursday, February 15, 2007

JACKSON -- Gov. Dave Freudenthal indicated Wednesday a state wolf bill may not be dead, as he submitted "language" to legislative leadership Tuesday that would structure a bill that could become effective before or after the wolf is removed from federal protection.

"I don't know whether they are going to act on it," the governor said. "There's some reluctance to adopt the new geographic definition." He asked that legislators have a chance to review the language before releasing it publicly, and did not give any indication as to what the new language would be.

Freudenthal said from his perspective, the new geographic range outlined by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in December as trophy game area for wolves is "a pretty significant concession on their part."

1. I am curious what the issue is; more or less land?

2. No, the issue is
Which land the wolf can be hunted as a trophy animal on.

Another story
Could wolf as predator area be expanded?

Wyoming wants to manage the wolf dually, protected in certain areas (trophy animal), and hunting allowed in others (predator--shooting allowed on sight).

4. It is interesting to note that this tension has existed since Teddy Roosevelt
established public lands.

It's at first seemingly ironic and then complicated.

5. Wyoming ranchers want to kill the wolves--my reason #1 for NOT eating beef
Edited on Thu Feb-15-07 10:52 AM by TheBorealAvenger
With reasons number 2, 3, and 4 being that cows are destroying the watershed and countryside, that eating meat overconsumes resources and that beef production is worse for CO2 output than driving an SUV for a commuter car.

That article is poorly written, because it does not give the context of the story.

(Most) Wyomans want the wolf taken off the federal endangered species list so that the state can "manage" it, and they can go about with their wolf massacre.

Number 5 is that the food is full of fat and free radicals; overconsuming protein is bad for humans. Number 6 is that beef overconsumes water resources and the animals crap in the water and pollute it. Number 7 is that they treat the animals cruelly--heck that could be reason number 1.

The Boreal Avenger..."not cutting down on coffee". Oatmeal and raisins for me, please.

7. I haven't read the articles but you confirm what I suspected.
I am going to take my boys to Wyoming this summer, so I am reading up about Wyoming.

8. We were planning to go "back to Yellowstone" this summer
Edited on Thu Feb-15-07 11:17 AM by TheBorealAvenger
And do some camping. I have been there before and did all the usual sites. If you want any ideas, let me know. There is this hike on a suspension bridge near Yellowstone Falls. We especially want to camp in the northeast corner where "everybody" goes to see the wolves.

thanks for the heart! I just know it was you.

6. What kind of sick f**k would hunt a wolf for sport?
The same kind that participate in these tame animal hunts, I assume.

I become more of a misanthrope every day.
