One in ten Iraqis could be internally displaced by year-end: IOM

GENEVA (AFP) - Around one in ten Iraqis could end up internally displaced by the end of 2007 as the security situation continues to deteriorate, the International Office for Migration has said

The agency said Friday a further one million people in Iraq could be forced to leave their homes by the year's end, on top of the 1.4 million already displaced in the violence-wracked country before 2006.

The last official Iraqi census in 1997 put the population at 24 million, while the latest estimate in the CIA factbook, from July 2006, is around 27 million, the IOM said.

In the last three weeks alone, almost 18,000 people have been displaced in the 15 central and southern governorates of Iraq, taking the overall number of displaced people from these regions to 290,000 since February 2006, the IOM said.

Over 3.5 million have already fled, officially and certainly more than that actually have. So, based on 27 M general pop, we are already over the one in ten number.

Everyone who has the means to leave has left. Iraq's middle class, its civil servants, its teachers and firemen and governors, are ALL gone.

Iraq is FUBAR. TOAST. Done. You cannot run a country without its working class.

All that are left in Iraq are the ideologues and our kids.

will they be Shia or Sunni? Will we put the Shia in the north and the sunni in the west? Or north and south. After the Iraqi settle in do we have the hospital resources do deal with the maimings from the bombings? Isn't our healthcare strained enough? How will we ever deal with all the killings?

What if your community took in half of them, like that town in Ohio that ended up with 30,0000 Somalis who are now telling the original inhabitants how to live? I don't know why we have to take in every last loser and piece of human dreck from the entire world. I thought we were over there fighting so they would have a chance to live in a decent society on their native soil.

yes the media has done their magic. My perception is that Sunni and Shia religious nuts have been slugging it out since the 8th century. Of course they will forget all about it once they visit Disney World and Universal City Walk.

Where I live (in DC metro area) there are thousans of Muslims and the feds have arrested hundreds for terrorist activity. I am thinking about starting a list of them.
