Iraqi gas tanker blast kills six (105 injured)

Iraqi police say six people have been killed and 105 injured after a gas tanker exploded in the town of Taji, north of the capital, Baghdad.

The blast happened after the driver had parked the tanker, security officials said, suggesting it was an attack.

But police said it was still not clear if it was a bombing or an accident.

Dozens of people, including many children, were overcome by fumes from the tanker which was believed to be carrying chlorine gas.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- A tanker carrying chlorine gas exploded Tuesday morning outside a restaurant in the Iraqi town of Taji, killing at least six people, an Interior Ministry official said. At least 105 other people were either injured by the blast or poisoned by the fumes.

The official said a bomb on board the tanker caused the explosion.

Baghdad Security plan spokesman Gen. Qassim Atta had different casualty figures, telling state-run al-Iraqiya TV that five people died in the blast and 148 were poisoned by the gas.

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A bomb destroyed a truck carrying chlorine north of Baghdad on Tuesday, killing five people and spewing out toxic fumes that sickened nearly 140 others in an apparent dirty-bomb attack, Iraqi police said.

A source at police headquarters said the chlorine truck was rigged with explosives, suggesting it was a dirty bomb employing a readily available substance used to purify water. A second police source also said the bomb was on the truck.

The truck exploded near a restaurant at a rest stop on the main highway in Taji, 20 km (12 miles) north of Baghdad.

Twisted metal and debris littered the ground in front of a tire repair shop after the blast, which sent out toxic fumes that caused scores of people to be taken to hospital.

Police said at least five people were killed and the total number of hurt including those sickened by the chlorine as well as those hit by the explosion was 139. Many women and children were among them.

Description: AR RAMADI, Iraq – Emergency Response Unit personnel, Iraqi Police, and civilians northwest of Ramadi were attacked by a suicide vehicle-born improvised explosive device (SVBIED) early Sunday. Coalition forces responded to the attack to provide immediate medical assistance and evacuate the wounded to medical facilities.

Along with the suicide bomber, 16 people were killed by the attack.

The SVBIED was a dump truck filled with explosives and included a chlorine tank. The truck crashed into the Emergency Response Unit compound and detonated. There are no indications of any casualties caused by the release of chlorine gas.
